Optical activity measurement by use of a balanced detector optical heterodyne interferometer.

What we believe to be a novel amplitude sensitive optical heterodyne polarimeter in which a Zeeman laser is associated with balanced detector detection was set up. The aim was to measure the optical activity of a quartz crystal with a Cornu depolarizer at high accuracy. The features of this novel polarimeter, which include the use of a two-frequency laser that ensures the accuracy of the measurement, are discussed. Furthermore, the detection sensitivity of the optical activity of a quartz crystal was measured as 8.5x10(-10). To our knowledge, this is the highest sensitivity obtained for optical activity measurement of a quartz crystal when the error of the measurement is also analyzed.

Balanced detector interferometric ellipsometer.

A novel balanced detector interferometric ellipsometer (BDIE), composed of a polarized common-path optical heterodyne interferometer incorporating a novel balanced detector, provides an amplitude-sensitive method for measurement of the elliptical parameters of a thin film. The requirement for equal amplitude of the polarized heterodyne signals for balanced detection results in the simultaneous measurement of the elliptical parameters in terms of the azimuth angle of a half-wave plate and the output intensity from the differential amplifier, respectively. The common-path feature of BDIE shows a common phase noise rejection mode and this enhances the sensitivity of the phase measurement. At the same time, the balanced detector configuration of BDIE reduces excess noise of laser intensity fluctuation to give better sensitivity during measurement. The error of measurement of BDIE is derived and analyzed. Finally, the elliptical polarization effect of the laser beam is found to be independent of the measurement of the elliptical parameters.

Determination of optical parameters of a twisted-nematic liquid crystal by phase-sensitive optical heterodyne interferometric ellipsometry.

What is believed to be a novel phase-sensitive optical heterodyne interferometric ellipsometer is set up to characterize a twisted-nematic liquid crystal (TN-LC) by the elliptical parameters of the output polarization state. This ellipsometer presents the advantages of both polarized optical heterodyne interferometry and optical photometry, which introduce a polarization modulation that is capable of performing with high-sensitivity on phase detection in real time. The twist angle phi and the untwisted phase retardation gamma of TN-LC are measured precisely. The experimental results verify that a TN-LC can be treated as identical to an elliptical retarder.

Properties of a diffused photon-pair density wave in a multiple-scattering medium.

A novel diffused photon-pair density wave (DPPDW) composed of correlated polarized photon pairs at different temporal frequencies and orthogonal linearly polarized states is proposed. A theory of DPPDWs is developed. A DPPDW selected by coherence gating and polarization gating that satisfies the diffusion equation has been verified experimentally. The sensitivity of amplitude and phase detection of the heterodyne signal has been improved by the properties of synchronized detection and common-path propagation of polarized pair photons in a multiple-scattering medium. Both reduced scattering coefficient micro2s' and absorption coefficient micro2alpha of the scattering medium in terms of the measured phase and amplitude of the heterodyne signal have been obtained. The detection sensitivity of micro2s' and micro2alpha and the properties of a DPPDW in a multiple-scattering medium are discussed and analyzed.

Circularly polarized optical heterodyne interferometer for optical activity measurement of a quartz crystal.

Phase retardation between two orthogonal circularly polarized light waves that propagate in an optical active medium is proportional to its optical activity. The measurement of optical activity of a quartz depolarizer in terms of the phase difference of two orthogonal circularly polarized waves is proposed. A circularly polarized optical heterodyne interferometer with a Zeeman laser to measure the optical activity of a quartz crystal is demonstrated experimentally. The accuracy of the measurement is discussed. In addition, the effect of elliptical polarization and nonorthogonality of linearly polarized light waves of a Zeeman laser on the optical activity measurement is analyzed.

Optical heterodyne surface-plasmon resonance biosensor.

A novel optical heterodyne surface-plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor with a Zeeman laser is proposed. Two surface plasma waves are excited by two correlated p-polarized waves in a SPR device of the Kretschmann configuration. Two reflected p waves are optically heterodyned such that the magnitude of the heterodyned signal is proportional to the multiplication of two attenuated reflected p waves. Then the detection sensitivity and the dynamic range based on this amplitude-sensitive method are enhanced. In the experiment, the kinetics between mouse immunoglobulin G (IgG) and rabbit antimouse IgG is obtained from sensograms of various concentrations of antimouse IgG. A detection sensitivity of 0.2 nM was achieved. In addition, a concentration of 5 ng/ml of protein G interacting with mouse IgG was measured successfully.

Application of phase-to-amplitude conversion technique to linear birefringence measurements.

A novel technique that measures the linear birefringence of crystal quartz within the configuration of a Soliel-Babinet compensator (SBC) is proposed. A characteristic of this technique is that phase retardation introduced by quartz is amplitude modulation (AM) instead of phase modulation (PM). The linear birefringence is measured regardless of the azimuth angle of the SBC and the orientation of the linear polarization laser beam. Compared with the single-wedge method, the SBC is similar to a parallel plate that allows for a wider range of refracttive index of the test material to be measured. This proposed method uses a conventional amplitude demodulation method in conjunction with an optical heterodyne technique and a bandpass filter to produce a better signal-to-noise ratio. Although the SBC configuration is more complex than a single element, the independence of azimuth angle and the orientation of the linear polarized laser beam can enhance the sensitivity of the linear birefringence measurement.
