Tuning the hydrophilicity of gold nanoparticles templated in star block copolymers.

We report on a simple procedure to tune the hydrophilicity of hybrid gold nanoparticles. The nanoparticles have been prepared in the core of a poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PEG-b-PCL) five-arm star block copolymer. A hydrophilic corona was then added to these hybrid gold nanoparticles by direct chemisorption of trithiocarbonate-containing poly(acrylic acid) chains. These polymers were synthesized by RAFT polymerization with a trithiocarbonate as the chain-transfer agent. The efficiency of the grafting was evidenced by TEM, AFM, and DLS and by the successful transfer of these nanoparticles from organic solvent to water.

Parameters influencing the templated growth of colloidal crystals on chemically patterned surfaces.

The influence of various experimental parameters on the vertical deposition and structure formation of colloidal crystals on chemically patterned surfaces, with hydrophilic and hydrophobic areas, was investigated. The pattern dimensions range from about 4 to 400 microm, which is much larger than the individual particle size (255 nm), to control the microscopic crystal shape rather than influencing the crystal lattice geometry (as achieved in colloidal epitaxy). The deposition resolution and selectivity were tested by varying the particle concentration in the suspension, the substrate withdrawing speed, pattern size and orientation, and wetting contrast between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions. The evolution of colloidal crystal thickness with respect to the pattern dimensions and deposition parameters was further studied. Our results show that the pattern size has a rather strong influence on the deposited number of colloid layers and on the crystal quality. Better results are obtained when the lines of a stripe pattern are oriented parallel to the withdrawing direction rather than perpendicular. The deposition resolution (defined as the minimum feature size on which particles can be deposited) depends on the wetting contrast and increases with lower average hydrophobicity of the substrate.

Combinatorial synthesis of star-shaped block copolymers: host-guest chemistry of unimolecular reversed micelles.

The combination of combinatorial techniques for the synthesis as well as for the screening of novel star-shaped block copolymers consisting of a poly(ethylene glycol) core and a poly(caprolactone) shell leads to a fast evaluation of interesting properties of these materials. The polymers could be synthesized in a fully automated parallel fashion, and the screening of their host-guest properties was accomplished by utilizing a UV/vis plate reader extraction assay. The investigated polymers revealed unimolecular micellar behavior, and their maximum loading capacity could be correlated to their chemical structure. This opens avenues to an improved understanding of the requirements for unimolecular micellar behavior. Furthermore, the accelerated findings clearly point out the advantages of applied combinatorial approaches.

Mechanically linked polycarbonate.

The synthesis, by solid-state copolymerization, and characterization of the first polycatenanes based on a commercial polymer are reported. Various amounts of a benzylic amide [2]catenane, the corresponding macrocycle, and a rigid bisphenol fluorene derivative have been quantitatively and homogeneously incorporated into bisphenol A polycarbonate. The resulting copolymers were characterized by size exclusion chromatography coupled with viscosimetry, (1)H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis. The unexpectedly small influence of [2]catenane incorporation on the glass transition temperature of the copolymers points to remarkable internal mobility of the catenane comonomer rings. A new relaxation linked to the flexible catenane units is also observed. The studies represent a detailed structural characterization of a polymer containing small amounts of mechanical linkages in its backbone and demonstrate that significant effects can be induced by doping conventional polymers with small percentages (2-6% of repeat units) of flexible catenanes.
