Phosphorus(I) iodide: a versatile metathesis reagent for the synthesis of low oxidation state phosphorus compounds.

An improved method for the synthesis of cyclic low oxidation state P cations is presented. The only byproducts of the reaction of phosphorus triiodide with chelating phosphines are readily removed, resulting in an easily accessible P(I) reagent with an anion that can be readily replaced through salt metathesis chemistry. These P(I) salts are surprisingly stable, even in O2 and moisture, and the origin of this unusual stability is elucidated using density functional theory calculations.

Dissociation of 2,4-bis(2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl)-cyclo-1,3-dipnicta-2,4-diazanes (pnict = P, As, Sb) imposed by substituent steric strain: a cyclobutane/olefin analogy.

Three 2,4-bis(Mes)-cyclo-1,3-dipnicta-2,4-diazanes, 2PnX, have been synthesized as 1,3-dichloro- (Pn = As; X = Cl) or 1,3-bis(triflato)- (Pn = P, Sb; X = OTf) derivatives (Mes = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl; OTf = triflato = trifluoromethanesulfonoxy). The compounds have been structurally characterized as cyclodimers, but spectroscopic characterization of melts and solutions indicates facile dissociation of the diphosphadiazane 2POTf derivative to give the corresponding iminophosphine 1POTf and of the diarsadiazane 2AsCl derivative to give the corresponding iminoarsine 1AsCl. 1,3-Bis(triflato)-2,4-bis(Mes)-cyclo-1,3-distiba-2,4-diazane (2SbOTf) does not dissociate in the melt or in solution. The presence of the sterically bulky Mes substituent does not preclude association of N-Pn olefin analogues to give single bonded cyclobutane analogues. The facile dissociation of 2POTf and isolation of 1POTf implicates a relatively high degree of substituent steric strain in the dimer. In comparison, dissociation of 2AsCl is only apparent in the melt and in solution, likely the result of the lower substituent strain in the larger N(2)As(2) framework. The largest N(2)Pn(2) framework in 2SbOTf provides sufficient space for the Mes substituents, and the monomer is not observed under the conditions examined.

Group 14 triple-decker cations.

The triple-decker cations trans-[(Cp*Sn)(2)(mu-eta(5):eta(5)-Cp*)](+) and trans-[(Cp*Pb)(2)(mu-eta(5):eta(5)-Cp*)](+) have been prepared and structurally characterized as their [B(C(6)F(5))(4)](-) salts from the reactions of [Cp*M][B(C(6)F(5))(4)](M = Sn, Pb) with the appropriate decamethylmetallocene. Both triple-decker cations adopt a cisoid arrangement of terminal Cp* groups, whereas the two known triple-decker main-group anions possess a transoid arrangement of terminal Cp groups. The reason for this conformational difference has been probed on the basis of DFT calculations.

Solid-state 93Nb and 13C NMR investigations of half-sandwich niobium(I) and niobium(V) cyclopentadienyl complexes.

Solid-state 93Nb and 13C NMR experiments, in combination with theoretical calculations of NMR tensors, and single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction experiments, are applied for the comprehensive characterization of structure and dynamics in a series of organometallic niobium complexes. Half-sandwich niobium metallocenes of the forms Cp'Nb(I)(CO)4 and CpNb(V)Cl4 are investigated, where Cp = C5H5- and Cp' = C5H4R- with R = COMe, CO2Me, CO2Et, and COCH2Ph. Anisotropic quadrupolar and chemical shielding (CS) parameters are extracted from 93Nb MAS and static NMR spectra for seven different complexes. It is demonstrated that 93Nb NMR parameters are sensitive to changes in temperature and Cp' ring substitution in the Cp'Nb(I)(CO)4 complexes. There are dramatic differences in the 93Nb quadrupolar coupling constants (C(Q)) between the Nb(I) and Nb(V) complexes, with C(Q) between 1.0 and 12.0 MHz for Cp'Nb(CO)4 and C(Q) = 54.5 MHz for CpNbCl4. The quadrupolar Carr-Purcell Meiboom-Gill (QCPMG) pulse sequence is applied to rapidly acquire, in a piecewise fashion, a high signal-to-noise ultra-wide-line 93Nb NMR spectrum of CpNbCl4, which has a breadth of ca. 400 kHz. Solid-state 93Nb and 13C NMR spectra and powder XRD data are used to identify a new metallocene adduct coordinated at the axial position of the metal site by a THF molecule: CpNb(V)Cl4.THF. 13C MAS and CP/MAS NMR experiments are used to assess the purity of samples, as well as for measuring carbon CS tensors and the rare instance of one-bond 93Nb, 13C J-coupling, 1J(93Nb,13C). Theoretically calculated CS and electric field gradient (EFG) tensors are utilized to determine relationships between tensor orientations, the principal components, and molecular structures.

Computational insights into the acceptor chemistry of phosphenium cations.

Phosphines are traditionally considered as Lewis bases or ligands in transition metal and main group complexes. Despite their electron-rich (lone pair-bearing) nature, an extensive coordination chemistry for Lewis acidic phosphorus centers is being developed; such chemistry provides a new synthetic approach for phosphorus-element bond formation, leading to new types of structures and modes of bonding. Complexes of Ph2P+ with a variety of donor elements (P, N, C) give experimentally short donor-acceptor bond lengths, when compared to other cationic phosphorus Lewis acid complexes. We have calculated that the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) in Ph2P+ is lower than that of (Me2N)2P+, which partially explains the greater exothermicity of reactions of donors with the diaryl acceptor. Furthermore, the energies required to distort the diphenylphosphenium cation from its ground-state geometry are significantly smaller than those of the diamido cations and, thus, enhance the exothermicity of donor coordination. These computational data, in conjunction with evidence from experimental solid-state structures, indicate that Ph2P+ is a significantly better Lewis acid relative to the more common diaminophosphenium analogues (R2N)2P+ and are used to elucidate the nature of the bonding in donor-phosphenium complexes.

Structure and dynamics of homoleptic beryllocenes: a solid-state 9Be and 13C NMR study.

The correlation between anisotropic 9Be NMR (quadrupolar and chemical shielding) interactions and the structure and dynamics in [Cp2Be], [Cp2*Be], and [(C5Me4H)2Be] is examined by solid-state 9Be NMR spectroscopy, as well as by ab initio and hybrid density functional theory calculations. The 9Be quadrupole coupling constants in the three compounds correspond well to the relative degrees of spherical ground-state electronic symmetry of the environment about beryllium. Theoretical computations of NMR interaction tensors are in excellent agreement with experimental values and aid in understanding the origins of NMR interaction tensors and their correlation to molecular symmetry. Variable-temperature (VT) 9Be and 13C NMR experiments reveal a highly fluxional structure in the condensed phase of [Cp2Be]. In particular, the pathway by which the Cp rings of [Cp2Be] 'invert' coordination modes is examined in detail using hybrid density functional theory in order to inspect variations of the 9Be NMR interaction tensors. The activation energy for the 'inversion' process is found to be 36.9 kJ mol(-1) from chemical exchange analysis of 13C VT CP/MAS NMR spectra. The low-temperature (ca. -100 degrees C) X-ray crystal structures of all three compounds have been collected and refined, and are in agreement with previously reported structures. In addition, the structure of the same Cp2Be crystal was determined at 20 degrees C and displays features consistent with increased intramolecular motion, supporting observations by 9Be VT NMR spectroscopy.

Stabilized arsenic(i) iodide: a ready source of arsenic iodide fragments and a useful reagent for the generation of clusters.

The new stable low oxidation state arsenic(I) iodide reagent [(dppe)As][I] (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) exhibits chemistry that is considerably different from its AsIII analogues. While [(dppe)As][I] is not crystalline, the crystal structure of the derivative salt [(dppe)As][(dppe)As2I7] is reported and is compared to that of [(dppe)As]2[SnCl6] x 2CH2Cl2. The air oxidation of [(dppe)As][I] produces crystals of the salt [Ph2P(O)CH2CH2P(OH)Ph2]2[As6I8] x 2CH2Cl2 and suggests that, in contrast to previous studies, the reaction of the univalent arsenic iodide salt with certain oxidants results in the oxidation of the dppe ligand and the release of "AsI-I" fragments that oligomerize to form AsI clusters. Such reactivity is confirmed by the reaction of 6[(dppe)As][I] with 12Me3NO and 2[PPh4][I] to produce [PPh4]2[As6I8] and 6dppeO2. The reactivity is rationalized using density functional theory calculations.

Azines possessing strong push-pull donors/acceptors.

Azines (R(2)C[double bond, length as m-dash]N-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CR(2)) are 2,3-diaza analogues of 1,3-butadiene. In this report we show that strong polarisation of the azine imparts structural features consistent with delocalization within the azine fragment; NLO properties for the azines are also reported.

Synthesis of 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidenes and their interaction with acetonitrile and chalcogens.

Two new, more convenient methods for the synthesis of 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidenes are described. Four new 1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidenes have been prepared using these methods: 1-(1-adamantyl)-3,4-diphenyl-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene (2a), 1-(1-adamantyl)-3-phenyl-4-(p-bromophenyl)-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene (2b), 1-(1-adamantyl)-3-phenyl-4-(alpha-naphthyl)-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene (2c), and 1-(1-adamantyl)-3,4-di(p-bromophenyl)-1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene (2d). The X-ray crystal structures of 2d and the precursor salt 1-(1-adamantyl)-3,4-di(p-bromophenyl)-1,2,4-triazolium bromide (1e) are described. Compound 2a reacts with CH(3)CN via C-H insertion to form 1-(1-adamantyl)-3,4-diphenyl-5-cyanomethyl-5H-1,2,4-triazoline (3), and 2a and 2d react with elemental sulfur and elemental selenium, respectively, to form the corresponding thione (4) and selenone (5).

Anisotropic NMR interaction tensors in the decamethylaluminocenium cation.

Solid-state NMR experiments, analytical and numerical simulations of solid NMR powder patterns, ab initio self-consistent field and hybrid density functional theory calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction are used to characterize the molecular structure and anisotropic NMR interaction tensors in the bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)aluminum cation, [Cp(2)Al](+). This highly symmetric main group metallocene has a structure analogous to that of ferrocene and the cobaltocenium cation. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure is reported for [Cp(2)Al][AlCl(4)]. Solid-state (27)Al[(1)H] magic-angle spinning and static NMR experiments are used to study the aluminum chemical shielding and electric field gradient tensors, revealing axial symmetry in both cases with a large chemical shielding span of Omega = 83(3) ppm and a small nuclear quadrupole coupling constant, C(Q)((27)Al) = 0.86(10) MHz. Carbon-13 CPMAS NMR experiments in combination with ab initio calculations and simulations of the effects of chemical exchange on (13)C static powder patterns reveal dynamic rotation of rings and suggest a low internal rotational barrier for this process. Theoretical computations of interaction tensors using the Gaussian 98 and Amsterdam Density Functional software packages are in good agreement with experiment and lend insight into the molecular origin of these NMR interactions. Orientations of the NMR tensors determined from theory, the large chemical shielding span, and the very small value of C(Q)((27)Al) can all be rationalized in terms of the high molecular symmetry.
