Multi-dark-state resonances in cold multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms.

We present our experimental and theoretical studies of multi-dark-state resonances (MDSRs) generated in a unique cold rubidium atomic system with only one coupling laser beam. Such MDSRs are caused by different transition strengths of the strong coupling beam connecting different Zeeman sublevels. Controlling the transparency windows in such an electromagnetically induced transparency system can have potential applications in multiwavelength optical communication and quantum information processing.

Experimental demonstration of quantum entanglement between frequency-nondegenerate optical twin beams.

The quantum entanglement of amplitude and phase quadratures between two intense optical beams with a total intensity of 22 mW and a frequency difference of 1 nm, which are produced from an optical parametric oscillator operating above threshold, is experimentally demonstrated with two sets of unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The measured quantum correlations of intensity and phase are in reasonable agreement with the results calculated based on a semiclassical analysis of the noise characteristics given by Fabre et al. [J. Phys. (France) 50, 1209 (1989)].

Continuous-variable quantum state transfer with partially disembodied transport.

We propose a new protocol of implementing continuous-variable quantum state transfer using partially disembodied transport. This protocol may improve the fidelity at the expense of the introduction of a semiquantum channel between the parties, in comparison with quantum teleportation using the same strength of entanglement. Depending on the amount of information destroyed in the measurement, this protocol may be regarded as a teleportation protocol (complete destruction of input state), or as a cloning protocol (partial destruction), or as a direct transmission (no destruction). This scheme can be straightforwardly implemented with a setup that is at present experimentally accessible.

Simultaneous experimental generation of vacuum squeezing and bright amplitude squeezing from a frequency doubler.

Both vacuum-squeezed and bright amplitude-squeezed states of light are experimentally generated from a frequency doubler with a semimonolithic Fabry-Perot configuration consisting of a type II nonlinear crystal and a concave mirror. Vacuum squeezing of 3.2 +/- 0.1 dB and amplitude squeezing of 1.3 +/- 0.2 dB are obtained simultaneously at a pump power of 8 mW. The two quadrature-squeezed optical fields that are generated are of identical frequency at 1080-nm wavelength and orthogonal polarization. Optimizing the input pump power by 19 mW yields as much as 5.0 +/- 0.2 dB of maximum vacuum squeezing. The advantages of the system are its simplicity and multiple utility.

Experimental demonstration of unconditional entanglement swapping for continuous variables.

The unconditional entanglement swapping for continuous variables is experimentally demonstrated. Two initial entangled states are produced from two nondegenerate optical parametric amplifiers operating at de-amplification. Through implementing the direct measurement of the Bell-state between two optical beams from each amplifier the remaining two optical beams, which have never directly interacted with each other, are entangled. The quantum correlation degrees of 1.23 and 1.12 dB below the shot noise limit for the amplitude and phase quadratures resulting from the entanglement swapping are measured straightly.

Controlled shift of optical bistability hysteresis curve and storage of optical signals in a four-level atomic system.

The dependence of the shift of an optical bistability hysteresis curve on the nonlinear phase shift induced by a controlling light is observed in a four-level atomic system of 87 Rb inside an optical ring cavity. In the process the intensity of the coupling beam keeps constant and the atomic system is operated at near conditions of coherent population trapping due to atomic coherence. The refractive and absorptive chi3 nonlinearities enhanced by atomic coherence provide the physical mechanism of the phenomena. Based on the effects, all-optical flip-flop and storage of optical pulse signals with a low peak power of several tens of microwatts are implemented.

Experimental demonstration of tripartite entanglement and controlled dense coding for continuous variables.

A tripartite entangled state of bright optical field is experimentally produced using an Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen entangled state for continuous variables and linear optics. The controlled dense coding among a sender, a receiver, and a controller is demonstrated by exploiting the tripartite entanglement. The obtained three-mode "position" correlation and relative "momentum" correlation between the sender and the receiver, and thus the improvements of the measured signal to noise ratios of amplitude and phase signals with respect to the shot noise limit are 3.28 and 3.18 dB, respectively. If the mean photon number n equals 11 the channel capacity can be controllably inverted between 2.91 and 3.14. When n is larger than 1.0 and 10.52, the channel capacity of the controlled dense coding is predicted to exceed the ideal single channel capacity of coherent and squeezed state light communication, respectively.

Suppression of intensity noise of a laser-diode-pumped single-frequency Nd:YVO4 laser by optoelectronic control.

The intensity-noise reduction of a laser-diode-pumped single-frequency ring Nd:YVO4 laser when different optoelectronic control systems are used is theoretically and experimentally investigated. It has been demonstrated that combining two techniques, optoelectronic feedback control of the drive current of the pump laser diode and feed-forward control of the output laser beam, is a good way to significantly suppress the intensity noise of a laser at low frequency.

Application of an all-solid-state, frequency-doubled Nd:YAP laser to the generation of twin beams at 1080 nm.

A laser-diode-pumped intracavity frequency-doubled Nd:YAP/KTP laser is presented. Over 110 mw of TEM00 single-frequency output power at 540-nm wavelength was obtained. The output green laser was employed to pump a semimonolithic nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator to produce intensity quantum correlated twin beams at 1080 nm, and the maximum quantum noise squeezing of 74% (5.9dB) on the intensity difference fluctuation between the twin beams is observed. The threshold was reduced and the stability was increased significantly when compared with similar lamp-pumped systems.

Tunable continuous-wave doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator by use of a semimonolithic KTP crystal.

A temperature-tuned continuous-wave doubly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) consisting of a semimonolithic KTP crystal and a concave mirror has been designed and built. Under single-axial-mode-pair operation, we obtained a combined output power of the signal and idler light fields up to 365 mW at a pump power of 680 mW. The output wavelength of the OPO can be temperature tuned by as much as 9 nm. We achieved 2.8-GHz continuous frequency tuning of the OPO by tuning the pump laser frequency.

Quantum dense coding exploiting a bright Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen beam.

Highly efficient quantum dense coding for continuous variables has been experimentally accomplished by means of exploiting a bright Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) beam with anticorrelation of amplitude quadratures and correlation of phase quadratures. Two bits of classical information are encoded on two quadratures of a half of a bright EPR beam, then are simultaneously decoded by the other half of the EPR beam with the sensitivities beyond that of the shot noise limit. A high degree of immunity to unauthorized eavesdropping has been experimentally demonstrated.
