[Visualization of the false tendon in the left ventricle with echocardiography and its clinical significance (author's transl)].

Echocardiographic features of the false tendon in th left ventricle and its clinical significance were reported. The subjects consisted of 132 consecutive patients, in whom the left ventricle was satisfactorily examined from various aspects with two-dimensional echocardiography. In general, the false tendon was detected in the long axis view of the left ventricle from the apical approach. It was detected in 61 of 132 consecutive patients with echocardiography. The incidence did not seem to be related to the kinds of underlying conditions. The false tendon was usually a string, a few millimeters in width, crossing the ventricular cavity from the vicinity of the papillary muscles to the interventricular septum. In a few patients it looked as Y-figure and net like. Sometimes, several sticks of the false tendon were detected. It was observed to be stretched in diastole and relaxed in systole. On the M-mode echocardiogram the false tendon was displayed as a linear echo moving with heart beat. The false tendon revealed near the interventricular septum, exhibited a motion so similar to that of the interventricular septum that it should be carefully differentiated from the echo of the left ventricular surface of the septum. In 2 patients of valvular heart disease, it was observed to be fluttered in diastole. Echocardiography was more useful in detecting the false tendon than left ventriculography.

Histopathological study on right endomyocardial biopsy of Kawasaki disease.

Fifty right ventricular endomyocardial biopsy specimens taken from patients with Kawasaki disease were studied. These were taken from 33 male and 17 female patients. Biopsies were examined for inflammatory cell infiltration, fibrosis, myocardial fibre disarrangement, and the cellular and nuclear changes of hypertrophy. A score of severity was prepared. The degree of abnormality was found to correlate with the duration of the disease, as did fibrosis found in 18 cases (36%), but inflammatory cell infiltration did not (13 cases, 26%). Coronary involvement was restricted to the male patients but the myocardial changes occurred in both sexes.

Type C particles in culture of human glioblastoma cells.

A long-term cell culture of human glioblastoma was investigated microscopically, virologically, and biochemically. Reverse transcriptase activity was detected in cultured human glioblastoma cells. 3H uridine was incorporated into particles of buoyant density at 1.07 g/ml (Ficoll) which is equal to that of Oncorna virus particles, but 3H thymidine was not incorporated at all. Furthermore, reverse transcriptase activity was also demonstrated with the particles, suggesting that the cultured human glioblastoma cells were producing type C Oncorna virus. Ultrastructural observations of cell culture of glioblastoma showed type C virus particles in cisternae and culture medium. Budding of the virus was also seen on the surface of the cell. The mean diameter of the particles was approximately 100 nm. Ca. 1.1 nm of spikes protruded from the envelope. Both types of virions were observed, i.e. the doughnut-shaped type form and the solid circular form.

Necrotizing myopathy as a remote effect of gastric cancer accompanied with Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

An autopsy case of a 74-year-old male who had shown clinically hypothyroidism due to chronic atrophic thyroiditis (Hashimoto's thyroiditis), and pathologically necrotizing myopathy as a remote effect of gastric cancer was reported. Morphological features of this necrotizing myopathy was those of carcinomatous myopathy rather than those of hypothyroid or diabetic myopathy. As for the pathogenesis of the necrotizing myopathy (as a Group IV of polymyositis of Walton and Adams), the malignancy might have played an important role as a trigger of the secondary immunological abnormality upon a pre-existing longstranding immune disorder of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Pseudomembranous colitis, which was thought to be related to antibiotics. (Lincomycin), was also briefly discussed.

Late in-stent restenosis of the abdominal aorta in a patient with Takayasu's arteritis and related pathology.

This report describes an in-stent restenosis of the infrarenal aorta in a patient with Takayasu's arteritis in a nonactive state. A 10-mm-diameter Wallstent had been deployed 42 months previously. The stented restenosed segment was replaced by a surgical graft. Histopathological examination of the excised aortic segment showed a thin layer of fibrocellular neointima and massive organized and calcified thrombus. To our knowledge, this is the first histopathological report of a late in-stent restenosis of the abdominal aorta in Takayasu's arteritis.

The relation between right ventricular function and left ventricular morphology in hypoplastic left heart syndrome: angiographic and pathological studies.

Cases of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) were studied angiographically in 18 patients and pathologically in 22 patients. They were divided into three subgroups according to the morphological features of the left heart: mitral atresia with aortic atresia (MA/AA), mitral stenosis with aortic atresia (MS/AA) and mitral stenosis with severe aortic stenosis (MS/AS). Patients with MS/AA had a significantly lower right ventricular end-diastolic volume index and more hypokinesis of the right ventricular posterior wall than those with MA/AA. MS/AA not only increased the thickness of the left ventricular posterior wall and interventricular septum but also increased endocardial thickness compared with MA/AA. Myocardial histology revealed more frequent abnormal findings such as myocardial necrosis, calcification and interstitial fibrosis in the mitral stenosis groups (i.e., MS/AA and MS/AS) than in MA/AA. Right ventricular function appeared to be greatly influenced by left heart structure. The presence of larger left ventricular muscle bulk and frequent myocardial damage seen in MS/AA seems disadvantageous to right ventricular end-diastolic volume and right ventricular wall motion.
