Intrasite Gel: a hydrogel dressing.

Intrasite Gel is a hydrogel designed for the debridement of necrotic tissue and effective desloughing, clearing the way for effective wound healing. It is also designed for wounds that are granulating and epithelialising. (Intrasite Gel is a trademark for Smith & Nephew Ltd.).

Gels↗

Kaltostat.

The wound dressings in C V Laboratories' Kaltostat range are composed of calcium sodium alginate. By managing the physical aspects of wounds, they also reduce the associated psychological distress.

Alginates↗

Tielle: a hydropolymer dressing.

Exuding wounds such as pressure sores and leg ulcers are often difficult to manage. Tielle is a foamed gel dressing with an exudate handling system that is different in structure from that of a hydrocolloid.

Exudates and Transudates↗

Demographic details and family background of nursing recruits.

This article provides current information on the demographic history and family background of those entering the conventional, degree and diploma (Project 2000) courses. This may have implications for the future recruitment of individuals into nursing.

Adult↗

Mepitel.

This article describes a relatively new product on the market called Mepitel, a non-adherent dressing that is useful in the management of many wound types and skin conditions, ranging from leg ulcers and skin grafts to the treatment of epidermolysis bullosa.

Aged↗

Allevyn.

This article describes a hydrocellular foam dressing which is able to absorb 10 times its weight in exudate, providing a cost-effective treatment option for exuding, granulating wounds.

Bandages, Hydrocolloid↗

HNE Diagnostics Dopplex ultrasound machines.

Doppler ultrasound is a technique that has a variety of uses. These include venous and arterial circulation assessment, pre- and postoperative arterial assessment, digital pulse assessment, carotid stenosis screening, penile blood flow measurement and fetal heart rate assessment.

Humans↗

Coban.

This article describes Coban, a self-adherent bandage, which forms the final layer in the Charing Cross 4-layer bandage system used in the treatment of venous leg ulcers. Coban also has several other applications, such as support of soft tissue injuries.

Bandages↗

Children's understanding of treatment in the A&E department.

This article focuses on the abilities of a child to understand the treatment given to him/her in an accident and emergency department. Piaget's theory of cognitive development is used as a framework to suggest ways of altering the approach to the child, thus helping to remove possible misunderstandings. This will lead to a reduction in stress and improved care, both for the child and his/her parents.

Adaptation, Psychological↗

Opsite flexigrid.

Opsite has a history dating back to the original work by George Winter (1962), who first demonstrated the value of a moist environment for wound healing. This article describes the development of Opsite to Opsite Flexigrid, incorporating a flexigrid application system.

Humans↗

Cavi-care.

Many will be familiar with Silastic foam cavity wound dressing, the first silicone foam dressing. This product has been redesigned, improved and relaunched by Smith and Nephew as Cavi-Care.

Bandages↗

Allevyn adhesive.

Allevyn Adhesive is a development of Allevyn Hydrocellular produced by Smith & Nephew Healthcare. Allevyn Adhesive comprises three layers and has the same absorbency as Allevyn Hydrocellular. The dressing is waterproof and requires no secondary dressing, tape or bandages. It is able to conform to the most awkward body areas such as the sacrum, heels and elbows. It is suitable for use on a variety of exuding wounds and can be used in conjunction with a hydrogel for sloughy wounds.

Aged↗

Lyofoam.

Foam dressings provide an excellent healing environment for granulating wounds. Lyofoam is a polyurethane foam dressing that comes in a variety of presentations for differing wound types. Lyofoam is suitable for light to moderately exuding, granulating wounds; Lyofoam Extra, a new addition, for heavily exuding wounds; Lyofoam A, an all-in-one dressing, for granulating wounds; Lyofoam T, a standard Lyofoam dressing with a special cross-cut, for tracheostomy wounds; and Lyofoam C, which has a carbon layer, for malodorous wounds. Lyofoam is a well-established, clinically proven wound dressing that promotes the ideal wound environment for healing. It has a low-adherent contact layer which leaves delicate granulation tissue undisturbed. It is also effective in the treatment of overgranulation.

Bandages↗

Cica-Care: adhesive gel sheet.

Keloid and hypertrophic scars can be a complication of burns, surgery and other traumas. Cica-Care (Smith & Nephew) has been developed for the prevention and treatment of such scars. This product focus presents the clinical features of both types of scars, highlighting the difference between them, and outlines the treatment options which include surgery, pressure treatment and pharmacological treatments. The mechanism of action of Cica-Care is still uncertain, but it appears to soften, flatten and blanch scars. The specific care of the gel sheet, including skin acclimatization, is also described.

Cicatrix↗

Irriclens: a sterile wound cleanser in an aerosol can.

Irriclens (ConvaTec) is the first wound cleanser to be presented in an aerosol can. Wound cleansing has become a ritualistic task; however, it should only be carried out if specifically required. Antiseptics have traditionally been used for wound cleansing, but in many areas are now being replaced by normal saline. Irriclens is a sterile, aqueous 0.9% sodium chloride solution, which can be used to cleanse a wound or for irrigation. Irriclens has the potential to be cost-effective as it prevents wastage and reduces the need for supplementary equipment.
