Ossifying fibromas involving the tibia were seen in two patients. In both patients, the radiographic appearance of the lesions suggested fibrous dysplasia, but histopathologic evaluation demonstrated findings similar to ossifying fibroma of the mandible and facial bones. Radiologic and pathologic recognition of this entity is necessary for proper treatment.
Severe peripheral vasoconstriction of the legs due to hypersensitivity to small doses of ergotamine tartrate developed in a patient with migraine headaches. The vasospasm was successfully treated with continuous intra-arterial and intravenous infusion of sodium nitroprusside. The contribution of angiography in the diagnosis and treatment of ergotism is stressed.
For fifty-five patients with acute low-back pain or radicular pain, ascending lumbar venography was as accurate as myelography (86 per cent) in localized herniation of a lumbar disc in surgically proved cases. Myelography and lumbar venography are complementary diagnostic studies which should be used together in doubtful cases. Lumbar venography is easily performed is well-tolerated, and is relatively painless. It is not associated with arachnoiditis and has a negligible complication rate.
Ventilation-perfusion lung imaging appears to be a significant nonivasive means of supporting the clinical diagnosis of Swyer-James syndrome. Three cases are presented which display characteristic delayed washout of xenon from a small or normal-sized, underperfused hyperlucent lung.
Radionuclide bone scans were performed on two patients with leprosy. The resulting scan patterns simulated hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and diffuse arthritis, findings entirely consistent with the primary disease process.
