Comparison of the effects of water deprivation and sodium chloride imbibition on the hormone content of the neurohypophysis of the rat.

1. Vasopressin and oxytocin have been measured in the neurohypophysis of rats which had either been given a 2% (w/v) NaCl solution to drink or been deprived of drinking water for up to 5 days.2. There was a progressive decrease in the vasopressin content of the glands in both groups; the rates of depletion were not significantly different.3. Oxytocin also decreased progressively in both groups but the glands from the ;saline-treated' rats contained less hormone than those from the ;water-deprived' animals.4. The differences in gland content of oxytocin could not be correlated with differences between the plasma osmolalities or sodium concentrations of the two groups.

Hypnosis for monitoring intraoperative spinal cord function.

In such procedures as the Harrington operation for idiopathic scoliosis, evaluation of spinal cord function is advisable immediately after the back is straightened. The authors have used hypnosis for this procedure, as an adjunct to anesthetic management. Patients are awakened on the table, given lower extremity tests, and are then reanesthetized. The incidence of postoperative pain and other discomfort is also reduced by hypnosis.

Why associate degree nursing students persist.

A study of 120 associate degree nursing (ADN) students at Illinois Central College during 1972-1973 tested the hypothesis that there will be no statistically significant difference in certain measured personality factors of the persister compared with the dropout. The Edwards Personal Preference Schedule (EPPS) was used to measure personality characteristics. The null hypothesis was rejected for four of the 15 variables measured by the EPPS. Significantly greater needs were achievement, deference, and heterosexuality for the persisters and abasement for the dropouts. Differences in needs may have resulted from two specific focuses of the ADN program: on the problem-solving process based on assessment of individual patient's needs and on team nursing which includes both the aspects of assuming responsibility for authority and accepting leadership. Through their greater need for abasement, the dropouts expressed a need for feelings of inferiority, guilt, blame, and inadequacy. Based on the academic prerequisites for admission to the ADN program, the dropouts should have succeeded. Therefore, it appeared the dropouts had a need to fail or withdraw from the program.

A post-marketing surveillance study of Voltarol 75 mg SR in the primary care setting.

A total of 7438 patients suffering from a wide variety of painful conditions was included in the final analysis of a post-marketing surveillance (PMS) study monitoring the use of Voltarol 75 mg SR in a primary care setting. Follow-up data were collected at visits conducted one, four and 12 months after the initial consultation. Improvement of symptoms was the most common reason for discontinuation of treatment (47% of patients who discontinued). Adverse events led to the withdrawal of 18% of patients overall. The rate of serious gastrointestinal complications was low (0.4%) and deleterious hepatic or renal effects were not apparent. There were significantly more events experienced by female patients and there was a significant effect of age on severe gastrointestinal events. In this PMS study Voltarol 75 mg SR was used successfully once or twice daily without any unexpected adverse effects in a manner consistent with current recommendations for the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
