Tranexamic acid in control of haemorrhage after dental extraction in haemophilia and Christmas disease.

In a double-blind trial tranexamic acid (AMCA, Cyclokapron), 1 g three times a day for five days, significantly reduced blood loss and transfusion requirements after dental extraction in patients with haemophilia and Christmas disease. No side effects were seen in either group of patients. Screening tests showed no toxic action of tranexamic acid on the liver, kidney, or heart.

An immunocytochemical study of the carbonic anhydrase I isoenzyme in human oral Merkel cells.

Merkel cells in human buccal mucosa and hard palate possess the carbonic anhydrase I isoenzyme (CAI). CAI colocalized immunocytochemically with a range of Merkel cell cytokeratins, namely CK 7, 8, 18, 19 and 20. No other cells in the oral epithelium were immunoreactive for the CAI antibody. The presence of the enzyme may be related to the function of sensory receptors that produce a sustained response to a maintained mechanical stimulus.

Cross-cultural study of initial visits to psychiatric outpatient clinics.

This descriptive and comparative study explored issues involving initial visits to psychiatric outpatient clinics. Seventy patients in an Irish clinic and 51 patients in a United States clinic were interviewed and 100 medical records in each clinic were reviewed to examine data on five variables: presenting complaints, critical incidents, referral processes, patient expectations, and reactions to treatment plans. Commonalities and differences between clinics were cited.
