Chromosome elimination in Ctenocephalides orientis (Siphonaptera).

Somatic and egg squashes of Ctenocephalides orientis exhibited a chromosome complement of 2n = 14,XY/XX, whereas the spermatocytes showed 2n = 15,XY1 Y2. The sex trivalent was restricted to spermatogenesis; in oogenesis only one sex bivalent was formed. Elimination of one of the Y chromosomes from the somatic cells was evident.

[Leiomyoblastoma (epithelioid leiomyoma) of the stomach: a pathomorphological and retrospective study of 6 cases (author's transl)].

Gastric leiomyoblastoma is a well defined mesenchymal tumor originating from the smooth muscle tissue (tunica propria) of the body and pyloric antrum of the stomach. Although these tumors are usually benign, some of them may be malignant or potentially malignant. On gross inspection the mostly solitary lesions protrude hemispherically or polypoidly into the gastric lumen. The mucous membranes overlaying the tumor may be eroded or deeply ulcerated so that gastric hemorrhage is the most important clinical finding. Microscopically the tumor tissue is composed of large, rounded or polyhedral cells, which often contain empty vacuoles in their finely granulated acidophilic cytoplasm. The round or oval nuclei are located in the center or at the periphery of the cell, sometimes giving the impression of "signet ring" cells. The size and chromatin density of the nuclei may vary, mitotic figures are rare or missing. Often the tumor cells are disaggregated by accumulations of PAS-positive edema, which may also contain many large and confluent empty vacuoles. The reticulum stain reveals a dense network of fibers encircling individual or small groups of tumor cells, as it is characteristic for smooth muscle tissue. In 4 cases we observed small nodules, which were composed of concentrically arranged fibers and tumor cells resembling hemangiopericytoma without central blood vessel. During 6 years (1970 to 1975) we observed 6 cases of gastric leiomyoblastoma. None of these patients had evidence of recurrent disease or metastatic spread 2 to 6 1/2 years after operation and histological diagnosis of the tumor.

Localization of the nucleolar organizer by computer-aided analysis of a variant no. 21 in a human isolate.

A variant chromosome no. 21 consisting of two stalks and two satellites in tandem was detected during a survey of a human isolate. The variant segregated in three generations of a large kindred. One male had the variant no. 21, a metacentric Y, and a 47,XXY complement; however, no other evidence of chromosomal nondisjunction was found. Computer-aided analysis of sequentially stained variant no. 21 chromosomes indicated that silver-stained material corresponded to the proximal stalk region (as defined by Giemsa), but often covered both the distal stalk and satellite (also as defined by Giemsa). These data support the hypothesis that human nucleolar organizers are localized to the stalks of acrocentric chromosomes.

A special photoproduct of UV-irradiated DNA in vacuo.

DNA isolated from E. coli B/r cells was UV-irradiated at 254 nm under high vacuum of 10(-7) torr. Compared with DNA in solution, the formation of cis-syn thymine dimers (TT) was decreased, and the formation of cytosine thymine dimers (CT) and a photoproduct of RF value 0.41 was increased. The latter photoproduct was identified as tran-syn TT which is preferentially produced in heat-denaturated DNA.

Spectral analysis of the normal electrocardiogram in children and adults.

We performed spectral analysis of the X-lead Frank VCG from six normal adults (Group A) and eight normal children (Group B) using a Fast Fourier Transform. The Group A magnitudes were consistently and significantly lower than Group B in the 20--90 Hz region. Similarly, the -40 dB point was 75 Hz for Group A and 107 Hz for Group B. The P waves of the two groups had similar spectra, as did their T waves. When the entire cardiac cycle was analyzed, there was again a consistent and significant difference in the frequencies from 25--80 Hz. Despite the significant differences in the Group A and B spectra, the vast majority of the information contained in the ECG signal was confined to frequencies below 100 Hz. Therefore, a bandwidth of 100 Hz is probably adequate for accurate recording of the ECG signal from children, as well as from adults.

Antisecretory actions of aminophylline in the rat and dog.

The effect of aminophylline on gastric acid secretion has been studied in the rat and dog. Aminophylline was shown to possess antisecretory activity when given either by oral or parenteral administration in an acute gastric fistula rat preparation. In the chronic gastric fistula dog aminophylline at 50 mg/kg intragastrically induced a small but significant stimulation of basal acid secretion. This dose of aminophylline also significantly inhibited acid secretion induced by gastrin tetrapeptide, and 2-deoxy-D-glucose but did not block acid secretion induced by histamine.

[Retroperitoneal haematomas in patients receiving anticoagulants. Therapeutic indications. One case (author's transl)].

Despite the customary absence of any preexistent lesion, aetiological studies should not be neglected, in particular intravenous pyelography and, above all, angiography. Wilst an attitude of therapeutic abstention has been the rule up to the present time, the indications of treatment may be modified in the absence of a local cause: - the small retroperitoneal haematoma benefits most from medical treatment; - surgical treatment should nevertheless be applied early in the case of: . large retroperitoneal haematomas, . whenever anticoagulant therapy must be maintained at all costs. . in the case of nerve compression. - Pre-operative angiography ensures selection of the safest surgical approach.
