The complement fixation test and African trypanosomiasis. II. The complement fixation test as an aid for assessing therapy.

Complement-fixing antibody titres decline after successful treatment of trypanosoma infected cattle during a fixed period. For investigating the practicability of the resulting double test procedure in the field, cattle under controlled drug regimes were tested at treatment and again 3 weeks later. Alternatively, the results from groups of treated and untreated animals from the same area were compared. Both serological and parasitological test results indicated an insuffieicnt effectiveness of therapy in the area under investibation.

Improvement of the production of Trypanosoma vivax antigens.

An improved technique for the production of Trypanosoma vivax antigen from infected cattle is described. This technique is based upon 1. the application of immunosuppressive drug, 2. the isolation of trypanosomes by centrifugation, and 3. the clearing of the trypanosome suspension from non sedimented blood cells by an anti-serum against bovine blood cells, raised in rabbits.

[Assessment of the Salmonella burden in slaughter pigs through the results of meat-juice-ELISA].

During a study on the salmonella infection rate in slaughter pigs, bacteriological results were collected from faecal samples and intestinal lymphnodes, and serological results were acquired from meat-juice-ELISA. Serological findings and resulting serological parameters were analysed for their capacity to provide an indication of the salmonella burden in a given lot of slaughter pigs or in the farm of origin. The arithmetic mean antibody concentration of a lot of slaughter pigs or a piggery, or the number of animals reacting above 30% according to the Danish standard, or the number of animals reacting above 40% according to the Danish standard are all three equally suited to differentiate between a low and a high level of infection. The mean antibody concentration was found to be the best parameter for epidemiological studies that compare the serological status between herds or investigate the development of antibodies within a given piggery.
