[The cooperation of pneumonologist and allergologist in the care of patients with bronchial asthma (author's transl)].

The initial manifestation of atopic bronchial asthma belongs in diagnostics and therapy into the field of the allergologist. But the services of the specialty tuberculosis and respiratory diseases can assist especially with hospital treatment in this care because the services for allergology in the policlinical departments for internal medicine and pediatrics do not dispose of bed capacities of their own. The cooperation of the specialty tuberculosis and respiratory diseases is appropriate in the dispensaire care and hospital treatment of asthmatics especially in those cases, when there is an infect-induced asthma, if any other respiratory diseases exist as complications of bronchial asthma or if disturbances of pulmonary function supervene. Then the consultation with the specialist of clinical immunology and allergology may become necessary.

Reflection of passive exposure to smoking in the home on the prevalence of chronic bronchitis in non-smokers.

Analysis of data assembled in an epidemiological investigation of 123 235 adults from three districts of the West Bohemian region incl. 57 217 male non-smokers from a total of 66 806 and 23 473 male non-smokers from a total number of 56 429 males revealed a high significant (p less than 0.005) rise in the prevalence of symptoms of chronic bronchitis in subjects exposed passively to smoking in the home. Exposure to other adverse factors increased the prevalence approximately three times in both sexes. The effect of passive exposure to smoking was, however, manifested far more in men. No reason was found in the investigated data for the interpretation of these differences. It appears that the cause could be the different behaviour of smokers to non-smokers in the home, where the smoker-husband usually is considerate to his non-smoker wife during her pregnancy and child care, while in women smokers this motivation is lacking.

[Cytological classification of lung carcinomata (author's transl)].

By comparing the cytological examinations and the final histological classification, the author discusses the possibilities of cytological type judgement. Using a staining method invented by himself, he was able to achieve a conformity of the cytological and of the final histological classification in 80 per cent of all cases. Abstaining from the differences in the judgement of maturity, the results of both methods were in conformity even in 89 per cent of all cases. As compared to the biopsy during bronchoscopy the cytological type classification was more exact. The difference had, however, proved to be insignificant (p greater than 0,05). The advantage of the author's own staining method is particularly obvious at the detection of mucus-forming carcinomata. In this way, two out of three mixed forms of epidermoid carcinomata and of adenocarcinomata could be correctly diagnosed.

[Cytology of pleura exudate in lymphoretic sarcoma (author's transl)].

In 2.9% of 1762 patients with pleura exudate, the underlying disease was a lymphoreticular sarcoma. The experienced cytologist has no difficulties to differentiate typical patterns of plasmocytoma, reticulumcell sarcoma or lymphogranulomatosis. But there may be borderline forms which can only be evaluated by critical examination. This holds true especially for differentiated types of lymphosarcoma which resemble the pattern of lymphocytic leukemia or observed through low magnification look like lymphocytic exudate. Therefore the use of oil immersion is necessary for evaluation of the smear. Fluorescence microscopy offers some advantages in special problems.
