Prognostic significance of contrast enhancement in low-grade astrocytomas of the adult cerebrum.

Between 1974 and 1977, 22 adults with low-grade (Grade I or II) astrocytomas of the cerebrum underwent initial computed tomography (CT) and craniotomy followed by irradiation of 5,000 to 6,000 rad (50 to 60 Gy). The four-year actuarial or life table survival rate was 58% for the eight patients whose initial CT scans showed contrast enhancement and 65% for the 14 patients whose tumors did not enhance (p = 0.8). Prognostic factors were comparable for the two groups. It is concluded that contrast enhancement has no prognostic significance for low-grade astrocytomas of the adult cerebrum.

Effects upon health of occupational exposure to microwave radiation (radar).

The effects of occupational experience with microwave radiation (radar) on the health of US enlisted Naval personnel were studied in cohorts of approximately 20,000 men with maximum opportunity for exposure (electronic equipment repair) and 208000 with minimum potential for exposure (equipment operation) who served during the Korean War period. Potential exposure was assessed in terms of occupational duties, length of time in occupation and power of equipment at the time of exposure. Actual exposure to members of each cohort could not be established. Mortality by cause of death, hospitalization during military service, later hospitalization in Veterans Administration (VA) facilities, and VA disability compensation were the health indexes studied, largely through the use of automated record systems. No adverse effects were detected in these indexes that could be attributed to potential microwave radiation exposures during the period 1950-1954. Functional and behavioral changes and ill-defined conditions, such as have been reported as microwave effects, could not be investigated in this study but subgroups of the living study population can be identified for expanded follow-up.

Identifying patients at risk for thromboembolism. Use of 125I-labeled fibrinogen in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

Fibrinogen labeled with iodine 125 was used to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in 35 patients during their course and convalescence from acute myocardial infarction. Clinical status was assessed and scored with the use of a modified coronary prognostic index. According to the prognostic scores, patients were allocated to one of two groups. Of 27 patients in good clinical condition, DVT developed in only one patient, whereas thromboembolic complications occurred in seven of eight patients who were severely ill--a highly significant difference. Prophylactic anticoagulation is advisable in patients at risk.

Natural occurrence of cross-linked vaccinia virus deoxyribonucleic acid.

The molecular weight of native vaccinia deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is 1 to 1.17 times that of native T4 DNA. Sedimentation of denatured vaccinia DNA through alkaline sucrose gradients yields an apparent molecular weight greater than twice that of denatured T4 DNA, implying that the complementary strands of vaccinia DNA do not separate upon denaturation. When alkali-denatured vaccinia DNA is neutralized, it has the physical chemical properties of native DNA when tested by sedimentation through neutral sucrose gradients, banding in CsCl, and by hydroxylapatite chromatography. We conclude that almost all mature vaccinia DNA molecules contain a small number of naturally occurring cross-links.

Separation of a new deoxyribonucleic acid polymerase from vaccinia-infected HeLa cells.

HeLa cell deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) polymerase was purified about 100-fold by sequential column chromatography on phosphocellulose, hydroxylapatite, and Bio Rex 70. A new form of DNA polymerase found in vaccinia virus-infected cells was separated from HeLa DNA polymerase by chromatography on diethylamino-ethyl cellulose. The new form was also purified approximately 100-fold in the same manner as the HeLa DNA polymerase. In addition to chromatographic differences, the two enzymes differed with regard to primer response, relative activity at high pH, inactivation by heat and p-chloromercuribenzoate, and inhibition by vaccinia antiserum.

Thyroid tumors associated with radiation exposure.

Epidemiologic studies of medically and environmentally exposed populations have been central to establishing ionizing radiation as a cause of malignant and benign thyroid tumors. Issues currently under investigation concern low dose effects, age sensitivity, the relative effectiveness of X-rays and iodine-131 in inducing thyroid cancer, and other risk factors. Excess thyroid tumors continue to appear in irradiated populations under study more than three decades after exposure.
