[Case report on fistula cervico-laqueatica].

It is reported on the fistula cervico-laqueatica as a special form of female genital fistula. Symptoms, reasons, and effects as well as possibilities for avoiding and treating of these fistulas are represented.

[Acute emergency in pregnancy: the vena-cava-inferior syndrome].

Report on symptoms of the vena cava inferior syndrome in two cases with description of the symptoms of danger by misunderstanding the situation. There is especially underlined that the obstetrics, anaesthesist, and the general practitioner can help in the situation with simple measures when he recognises the situation.

Abetalipoproteinaemia. A case report with pathological studies.

The clinical and pathological features of a case of abetalipoproteinaemia in a 38-year-old patient are described in detail. A feature not previously recorded was a marked reduction in the velocity of ocular horizontal saccadic movements. Pathological studies revealed an active chronic demyelinating process. The patient showed no response to large doses of vitamin E. The rationale for this therapy, and the possible reasons for its failure are discussed.

[Immunoglobulin level in herpes gestationis].

At a patient with herpes gestationis the immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM as well as the proteins albumin, transferrin and coeruloplasmin were determined in the serum. The relation of this illness of pregnancy with immunological factors is in discussion.

[Mechanisms of platelet aggregation inhibition caused by sulfonylurea compounds. 4. Discussion, summary, and literature].

6.1. It is known from the literature that in diabetes mellitus there is an increased tendency for the thrombocytes to aggregate. This fact represents a risk of thrombosis supplementary to the vascular wall lesions which develop in the course of this disease. An inhibition of platelet aggregation such as has recently been obse3rved in vitro under the influence of beta-cytotropic sulphonylureas (tolbutamide, glicalazide), must therefore be regarded as an additional, desired quality of action of these agents. 6.2. In an attempt to throw more light on this subject studies were conducted to discover whether an inhibition of platelet aggregation can be regarded as a basic property of all beta-cytotropic antidiabetic agents and whether dissociation exists between this property and the hypoglycemic effect. The possible existence of evidence for identical or similar sites of action of sulphonylureas on the control system of the thrombocytes, beta-cells and the liver was also investigated, the main point of interest being whether sulphonylurea derivatives exert their effects via the adenylate cyclase -cAMP-system. The thrombocytes were also used to discover whteher ss-cytotropic antidiabetic agents, such as non-steroidal antiphlogistic compounds, inhibit the synthesis of aggregation-promoting prostaglandins (PGE2). 6.3. The influence on adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced thrombocyte aggregation has been dtudied in vitro with platelet rich rat plasma (PRP) using a turbidimetric method. Preliminary studies have also been conducted with PRP obtained after previous treatment of the donor animals...

First experimental and clinical results with transscleral optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the potentials of optical coherence tomagraphy (OCT) using long wavelength to penetrate highly scattering tissues of the eye and visualize the anterior chamber angle and the ciliary body. METHODS: OCT images were generated by an experimental prototype in enucleated porcine eyes using as light source a superluminiscent diode with a wavelength of 1310 nm and a scan frequency of 60 Hz. The number of lateral scans was variable in a range from 100 to 400. RESULTS: Infrared OCT was able to penetrate the sclera. The anterior chamber angle could be visualized completely and the ciliary body could be identified. However, it was not possible to penetrate the highly reflective iris pigment epithelium. CONCLUSION: The use of infrared OCT allows penetration of the sclera, thus, providing complete visualization of the anterior chamber angle and limited demonstration of the ciliary body. Because of its higher resolution, it may represent an interesting noninvasive alternative to ultrasound biomicroscopy.

[Effect of carbonic acid concentration in blood on content of keto-acids and redox state of nicotinamide coenzymes in rabbit tissues].

A rise in the level of carbonic acid in animal blood at practically unchanged pH causes an increase in the value of free [NAD+]/[NADH] and [NADP+]/[NADPH] ratios in the liver cells cytoplasm. The increase in the oxidizing power of the liver cells cytoplasm is observed against a background of a rise in both the total level of keto-acids in blood and concentration of pyruvate oxaloacetate and alpha-ketoglutarate in the liver and kidneys of animals. The level of lactate, glutamate and citrate in these tissues also grows. The level of ketonic bodies in blood of the animals with a higher concentration of carbonic acid is somewhat lower than that in the animals with a lower concentration of HCO3 and CO2 in blood.

Catalyzed and assisted protein folding of ribonuclease T1.

The small single-domain protein ribonuclease T1 (RNase T1) and variants thereof are good substrates for investigating the mechanisms of catalyzed and assisted protein folding. RNase T1 contains two cis prolines and two disulfide bonds, and the kinetic mechanism of its folding is well known. The wild-type form and designed variants that differ in the number prolines and of disulfide bonds were used as substrates to study the catalysis of folding by prolyl isomerases and protein disulfide isomerases. In its unfolded form, a marginally stable variant of RNase T1 binds to the chaperone GroEL and could thus be used to elucidate the kinetic mechanism of GroEL-mediated protein unfolding.
