A study of the fish community structure in a tidal creek.

The fish assemblage in a mangrove tidal creek was studied in monthly collections between August 1998 and July 1999 in the quadrature low tide and high tide, using a fyke net of 30 m x 1.5 m and meshes of 8 and 10 mm. Simultaneously with the biological collections, temperature, salinity, pH, water transparency, and current speed data were obtained. The collections resulted in the capture of 36,873 fish representing 22 families and 52 species. Immature individuals abounded (63.8%), and among the adult specimens there was a larger number of females. The species Anchoa parva, Harengula clupeola, Genidens genidens, and Bairdiella ronchus, contributed to 84.9% of the total capture of fish, however the contribution in mass was of 55.2%, indicating a predominance of small individuals. A smaller number of fish and species seem to occupy the area in the period between August and December, in comparison to the period between February and July, when the larger aggregations appear, mainly of the species Anchoa parva, Harengula clupeola, Opisthonema oglinum, Genidens genidens, Diapterus rhombeus, and Bairdiella ronchus. The environmental factors, pH, water transparency, and rainfall seem to have an influence in the structure of the observed biological patterns.

Somatic embryogenesis and plant regeneration from leaves of Ulmus minor Mill.

Somatic embryogenesis from mature elm ( Ulmus minor Mill.) in vitro-cloned material is possible. Embryogenic callus was obtained from leaves inoculated on two different MS-based media-one supplemented with 2.3 microM 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (I2) and the other supplemented with 1.1 microM kinetin (I6). However, only leaves cultured on medium I6 produced somatic embryos, at the globular stage, when embryogenic callus was maintained in induction media. When embryogenic callus from medium I6 was transferred to basal medium, somatic embryos with green cotyledons were obtained. An average of 35.9% of these embryos converted easily into normal plants in conversion medium with 1% sucrose. Acclimatisation reached 39.7%, and this was not significantly different from a control group consisting of plants propagated by axillary buds. No morphological differences were observed between plants derived from somatic embryos and control plants. Also, no differences in ploidy were detected between the somatic embryo-derived plants and the mother plants.

Catechols from abietic acid synthesis and evaluation as bioactive compounds.

Catechols from abietic acid were prepared by a short and good yielding chemical process and further evaluated for several biological activities namely, antifungal, antitumoral, antimutagenic, antiviral, antiproliferative and inhibition of nitric oxide. Their properties were compared with those of carnosic acid (6), a naturally occurring catechol with an abietane skeleton and known to possess potent antioxidant activity, as well as anticancer and antiviral properties. From all the synthetic catechols tested compound 2 showed the best activities, stronger than carnosic acid.

Role of viruses and atypical bacteria in exacerbations of asthma in hospitalized children: a prospective study in the Nord-Pas de Calais region (France).

We studied the role of viruses and atypical bacteria in children hospitalized with exacerbated asthma by a prospective study of children with acute asthma admitted to the Department of Pediatrics in Lille, and to 15 hospitals in the Nord-Pas de Calais region, from October 1, 1998-June 30, 1999. We included children aged 2-16 years with active asthma, defined as three or more recurrent episodes of reversible wheezing. The severity of asthma and of asthmatic exacerbations was recorded. Immunofluorescence assays (IFA) on nasopharyngeal secretions (NPS), serological tests, or both, were used for detection of influenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenovirus, parainfluenza virus, and coronavirus. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays on NPS were used for rhinovirus and enterovirus. Serological tests for Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae were performed. A control group of asymptomatic asthmatic outpatients was examined for respiratory viruses (using IFA and PCR). Eighty-two symptomatic children (mean age, 7.9 years) were examined. Viruses were detected in 38% (enterovirus, 15.8%; rhinovirus, 12%; RSV, 7.3%). Serological tests for atypical bacteria were positive in 10% of patients (C. pneumoniae, 5%; M. pneumoniae, 5%). Among the 27 control subjects (mean age, 7.9 years), one PCR was positive for enterovirus. There was no correlation between severity of chronic asthma or asthmatic exacerbations and the diagnosis of infection. Atypical bacterial pathogen infections were linked with prolonged asthmatic symptoms. In conclusion, we confirmed the high incidence of viral infection in acute exacerbations of asthma, especially enteroviruses or rhinoviruses. Persistent clinical features were more frequently associated with atypical bacterial infections, suggesting that these infections should be investigated and treated in cases of persistent asthmatic symptoms.

Mechanism of bone-like formation on a bioactive implant in vivo.

The physical and chemical nature of the remodelled interface between the porous A3 glass-ceramic, composed of (wt%): SiO(2) = 54.5; CaO = 15.0; Na(2)O = 12.0; MgO = 8.5; P(2)O(5) = 6.0 K(2)O = 4.0, and the surrounding bone was studied after implantation into rat tibias. The interfaces which developed new bone layer in direct contact with the implants were examined by analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopy after implantation for 6, 8 and 12 weeks. Degradation processes of the implants also encouraged osseous tissue ingrowths into the pores of the material, changing drastically the macro- and microstructure of the implants. The ionic exchange initiated at the implant interface with the physiological environment was essential in the integration process of the implant, through a dissolution-precipitation-transformation mechanism. The interfaces developed non-toxic biological and chemical activities and remained reactive over the 12-week implantation period. These findings were significant as indicative of morphological and chemical integration of the A3 glass-ceramic into the structure of living bone tissue. A3 glass-ceramic could be suitable for the repair or replacement of living bone.

[Hypertrophic pulmonary osteo-arthropathy revealed by a pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in a 15-year-old girl].

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular tumor of the lung, that may be revealed by hypertrophic pulmonary osteo-arthropathy. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old patient was admitted because of a 1-month history of pneumonia associated with clubbing. A hypertrophic pulmonary osteo-arthropathy due to a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with lung epithelioid hemangioendothelioma was diagnosed. Despite surgical resection and chemotherapy, the patient died 6 months later. COMMENTS: Hypertrophic pulmonary osteo-arthropathy is a rare syndrome in childhood, and is frequently associated with chronic respiratory failure. Diagnosis is confirmed by long bones proliferative periostitis on standard X-ray examination. Pulmonary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular malignant tumor, that spreads from the vascular pulmonary or hepatic tissues. The prognosis is variable, depending on the malignancy of the tumor. In the absence of a chronic cardiorespiratory disease, the diagnosis of a pulmonary hypertrophic osteo-arthropathy in childhood should prompt the search for a tumoral cause.

Genetic structure and origin of peopling in the Azores islands (Portugal): the view from mtDNA.

The Azores islands (Portugal), uninhabited when discovered by Portuguese navigators in the fifteenth century, are located in the Atlantic Ocean 1500 km from the European mainland. The archipelago is formed by nine islands of volcanic origin that define three geographical groups: Eastern (S. Miguel and Sta. Maria), Central (Terceira, Faial, Pico, Graciosa and S. Jorge) and Western (Flores and Corvo). To improve the genetic characterisation of the Azorean population, and to clarify some aspects related to the history of settlement, a study of mtDNA was conducted in the population of the archipelago. The HVRI region was sequenced and specific RFLPs were screened in 146 samples obtained from unrelated individuals with Azorean ancestry (50 from the Eastern group, 60 from the Central group, and 37 from the Western group). Samples were classified into haplogroups based on the information obtained from both sequencing and RFLP analysis. All the analyses performed support the idea that, in the whole group of islands, the majority of mtDNA lineages originated from the Iberian Peninsula, mainly from Portugal (mainland). However contributions from other European populations, especially from Northern Europe, cannot be disregarded. The values obtained for the various diversity parameters in the Azores archipelago indicate that the Azorean population, as a whole, does not exhibit the typical characteristics of an isolated population. The analysis of genetic data by groups of islands showed that the Western group exhibited particular features. The distribution of haplogroups in the Western group is very atypical, being significantly different from what is observed in the Eastern and Central groups. Furthermore, the diversity values are, in general, lower than those observed in other populations used for comparison. African haplogroups were found in all the groups of islands. Therefore the presence of Moorish and African slaves on the islands, as reported in historical sources, is supported by the mtDNA genetic data, especially in the Eastern group. The presence of Jews in the Central group is also supported by the mtDNA data. Neither historical nor genetic data (phylogeography of mtDNA) supports the idea of a differential settlement history for the Western group; however, it is represented in the phylogenies as an isolated branch. The effect of genetic drift, induced by the reduced population size since peopling occurred, has led to a very atypical distribution of haplogroups/haplotypes in this group of islands. We cannot ignore the influence of biodemographic and genetic processes, namely founder effect, genetic drift, migration, and even recent mutational events in the mtDNA lineages of the Azorean populations. Nevertheless, a great part of the variation in the Azorean mtDNA can be explained by the settlement history.

[Reproducibility of the shuttle walk test in children with cystic fibrosis].

INTRODUCTION: Exercise testing is useful in the respiratory evaluation of patients with cystic fibrosis. The shuttle walk test (SWT) is a progressive, externally paced, exercise test requiring the subject to walk/run back and forth between two fixed points. The aim is to assess the reproductibility of the SWT in paediatric patients with cystic fibrosis. METHODS: This prospective study recruited 31 children with stable disease. The patients performed two SWT one day (SWT 1 and 2) and two others (SWT 3 and 4) within 15 days. Only SWT 2 and 4 were assessed for reproducibility. RESULTS: 61% were boys, median age (range): 12.9 (7-18.9) years, median Shwachman score (range): 80 (65-100), median values for FEV1 and FVC (range): 92 (55-154) and 92 (64-140)% predicted, respectively. Median distance for SWT 2-4 (range): 910 (580-1020) and 925 (540-1020) metres. Reproducibility for SWT distance and physical activity measured by an accelerometer is very good (intra-class correlation coefficient=0.90 and 0.92, respectively). SWT distance correlated with physical activity (p=3.10(-4)) and weight (p=0.03). SWT distance was independent of the following parameters: height, weight-for-age Z-score, FEV1, FVC, Shwachman score, colonisation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. CONCLUSIONS: The SWT is reproducible in paediatric patients with cystic fibrosis and provides assessment of respiratory performance that complements spirometric measures of lung function.

Topological defects in contracting universes.

We study the behavior and consequences of cosmic string networks in contracting universes. They approximately behave during the collapse phase as radiation fluids. Scaling solutions describing this are derived and tested against high-resolution numerical simulations. A string network in a contracting universe, together with the gravitational radiation it generates, can affect the dynamics of the universe both locally and globally and be an important source of radiation, entropy, and inhomogeneity. We discuss possible implications for bouncing and cyclic models.

Water absorption characteristics of dental composites incorporating hydroxyapatite filler.

Water uptake characteristics of BisGMA-based composites incorporating untreated and surface-treated hydroxyapatite (HA) with a silane coupling agent have been investigated. The water absorption and desorption behaviour of these composites obeyed the classical diffusion theory. The diffusion coefficients of the composites during first absorption were very similar to that for the base resin, suggesting that the water uptake process occur mainly in the resin matrix. The incorporation of HA reduced the water uptake of the base resin and lower uptake was found for those formulated with surface-treated HA. It was also observed that the equilibrium uptake decreased with increasing filler loading. However, the filled specimens had a higher water absorption than which would be expected on the basis of the resin content. This increase in the water uptake was largely due to the presence of porosity and filler particle aggregates in the microstructure of composites, although the adsorption of some water onto the filler surface has not been ruled out. The experimental composites showed higher solubilities than that obtained for the base resin.

[Inhaled corticosteroids in asthma in infants and young children].

Inhaled corticosteroids have become the mainstain in the treatment of asthmatic children and adults. Asthma in infancy and early childhood is a heterogeneous condition, with different disease phenotypes and outcome. However, rationale data justifying the use of inhaled corticosteroids in toddlers and preschool children are now available. We recall the results of controlled trials studying the efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids, their potential side-effects, and their actual indications and modalities of prescription.

HPV types and cofactors causing cervical cancer in Peru.

We conducted a hospital-based case-control study in Peru of 198 women with histologically confirmed cervical cancer (173 squamous cell carcinomas and 25 cases of adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma) and 196 control women. Information on risk factors was obtained by personal interview. Using PCR-based assays on exfoliated cervical cells and biopsy specimens, HPV DNA was detected in 95.3% of women with squamous cell carcinoma and in 92.0% of women with adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma compared with 17.7% in control women. The age-adjusted odds ratio was 116.0 (95% Cl = 48.6-276.0) for squamous cell carcinoma and 51.4 (95% Cl = 11.4-232.0) for adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinoma. The commonest types in women with cervical cancer were HPV 16, 18, 31, 52 and 35. The association with the various HPV types was equally strong for the two most common types (HPV 16 and 18) as for the other less common types. In addition to HPV, long-term use of oral contraceptives and smoking were associated with an increased risk. HPV is the main cause of both squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma in Peruvian women.

Follow-up study of intrahost HIV type 2 variability reveals discontinuous evolution of C2V3 sequences.

Sequence change dynamics in the highly polymorphic C2V3 region of the envelope glycoprotein gp105 coding sequence of HIV-2 was studied for two HIV-2 seropositive Guinean individuals over a 5-year period. Proviral DNA was amplified by PCR from uncultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), cloned, and sequenced. Amino acid sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis showed distinct viral populations for the three collected samples (1992, 1995, and 1997) for both individuals. A discontinuous replacement of sequences suggests activation of latent viruses present in reservoirs, a process that has been documented for the HIV-1 infection but unreported so far for HIV-2. The nucleotide sequences presented in this work have been assigned accession numbers AJ400276 to AJ400319.

Hydroxyapatite as a filler for dental composite materials: mechanical properties and in vitro bioactivity of composites.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) powder was treated with gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy-silane (gamma-MPS) using standard techniques in both non-polar and polar systems. Infrared spectra (DRIFT) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the presence of gamma-MPS on the surface of the HAp filler particles. Series of experimental composites consisting of bisphenol-a-glycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA) based resin and untreated or treated HAp filler were produced to determine the mechanical properties and in vitro bioactivity. The incorporation of HAp filler into the BisGMA base resin had an enhancing effect on the flexural strength and Young's modulus of the base resin, the latter being increased by a factor of three. The mechanical properties of the filled resin were not affected by the surface treatment of the HAp, but filler loading was found to have a significant effect on Young's modulus. Higher proportions of silane-treated HAp of smaller particle size could be incorporated in the monomer phase giving rise to composites of higher stiffness. Examination of the fracture surfaces showed that the silanized HAp particles maintained better contact with the polymer matrix. In vitro study revealed that the composites incorporating silanized HAp formed a compact and continuous calcium phosphate layer on their surface after 4 weeks immersion in a simulated body fluid (SBF).

Angiotensin converting enzyme in patients with sleep apnoea syndrome: plasma activity and gene polymorphisms.

The prevalence of several cardiovascular diseases is increased with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), due to, as yet, unclear reasons. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) abnormalities have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular diseases. In this study, plasma ACE activity and the distribution of an insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism of the ACE gene were determined in OSAS patients and in healthy controls. A total of 63 patients with OSAS (mean+/-SEM 54.5+/-2.5 apnoea/hypopnoeas.h(-1)) and 32 healthy subjects were studied. To avoid potential confounding factors, patients treated with ACE inhibitors or continuous positive airway pressure were excluded, as well as controls in whom a blood sample was not obtained early in the morning. ACE activity was determined spectrophotometrically in 46 OSAS patients and 25 controls. The I/D ACE polymorphism was determined by polymerase chain reaction in 44 patients and 32 controls. ACE activity was higher in OSAS patients (53.9+/-2.5 IU.L(-1)) than in healthy controls (42.4+/-3.1 IU.L(-1), p<0.01). This was independent of the presence of arterial hypertension. The frequency distribution of the DD, II and ID genotypes in OSAS patients (30%, 16%, 54%, respectively) was not significantly different from that seen in healthy subjects (31%, 28%, 41%, respectively, p=0.356). These results indicate that ACE plasma activity is increased in untreated OSAS patients. This increased activity may contribute to the pathogenesis of the cardiovascular disease in these patients.
