The study reported compared the positions of the horizontal axis of rotation of the condyles when R.A.P. registrations were taken on seven subjects using; (1) An anterior jig with chinpoint guidance. (2) An anterior jig with chinpoint guidance and applied muscle force by the subject. (3) An anterior jig with bilateral manipulation (i.e. bilateral support of the body of the mandible by the operator). The results showed that the most superior positions were obtained with the technique using the anterior jig with chinpoint guidance and applied muscle force, which was also the most inconsistent technique. The technique using the anterior jig with chinpoint guidance was most consistent, and the mean difference between retruded axis position and intercuspal position using this technique was 0.31 mm on the right side and 0.34 mm on the left side.

Very limited molecular epidemiological data are available on the role of Actinomyces spp. in the pathogenesis of caries in the primary dentition. Therefore, we investigated their distribution in supragingival plaque of ethnic Chinese preschool children from Singapore and Hong Kong, either with or without active caries. Plaque samples were taken from intact interproximal enamel areas using dental floss. Bacterial genomic DNA of each sample was extracted and variable regions of 16S ribosomal DNA amplified and labelled with digoxigenin. Oligonucleotide probes specific for Actinomyces bovis, Actinomyces gerencseriae, Actinomyces israelii, Actinomyces meyeri, Actinomyces odontolyticus, catalase-negative Actinomyces naeslundii (genospecies 1 and 2) and catalase-positive Actinomyces naeslundii genospecies 2 (previously Actinomyces viscosus serotype II) were used to detect these species using Southern hybridization with a Minislot and Miniblotter system. A. odontolyticus, A. gerencseriae and A. meyeri were detected with similar frequency in both Singapore and Hong Kong samples or in those with and without active caries. However, the prevalence of A. naeslundii was significantly different in the two locales (p<0.05). A. odontolyticus (88.7%), A. gerencseriae (56.6%) and A. naeslundii (50.9%) were detected in a majority of the samples and the positive hybridization signals of A. gerencseriae in the caries-active group were stronger than from the caries-free group. A. bovis and A. israelii were undetectable in any of the samples. These data imply that A. odontolyticus, A. naeslundii and A. gerencseriae may play an important role in supragingival plaque formation on primary teeth in ethnic Chinese, with others such as A. meyeri contributing.
Five automixed and one hand-mixed addition silicones were evaluated by counting the number of voids produced in impressions made. It was concluded that although automixing produced fewer voids than hand-mixing, certain automixed materials were better than others.
Few studies have investigated the effects of fear of the dentist on oral health and quality of care. In this study the oral health of 114 fearful and nonfearful children aged ten to fourteen years, in two representative Singaporean primary schools is compared. Further, the hypothesis that poorer quality of care is provided to fearful children as a result of management problems, is tested. Although there was a significant difference in quality of restorations provided in the different schools, the hypothesis that more fearful children would be in poorer oral health or obtain poorer dental care was not supported. It is postulated that the poor management of fear at this age may result in avoidance when the children are no longer part of a school-based delivery system.
