[Iatrogenic Cushing's syndrome in a patient with complex angiomatosis. Description of a case].

Hemangiomas present to physicians with some of the most difficult treatment problems known to medicine. Many modalities are available but all suffer some degree of complications. The Authors describe a case of Cushing's syndrome after steroid therapy of serious capillary-cavernous hemangiomas. This experience points out treatment problems and need of team management.

[Acetazolamide treatment of a newborn infant with posthemorrhagic cerebral ventricular dilatation].

We report a case of a male newborn delivered by vacuum at 40 weeks of gestation, who presented perinatal asphyxia, neonatal seizures and ventricular posthemorrhagic dilatation. The newborn was treated with Acetazolamide for 45 days until the reduction of the ventricular dilatation. This case shows the efficacy and the absence of collateral effects of Acetazolamide. This therapy suggests that it may be used as an alternative or an adjunct to lumbar punctures. The pharmacol treatment in the posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation has not been well studied and there are a few related cases in the literature.

Morphological features of blood circulation in the guinea pig lung.

The morphology of the lobar artery branches of the guinea pig lung was examined by optical microscopy and by the scanning electron microscope. Our results demonstrate that these branches consistently present a "rosary-like" structure that had been previously observed only occasionally in specimens of various organs from different animals. The function of these "bead-like" structures seems to be that of a control system of the blood flow to the lung alveoli, rather than that of a "pumping heart", as postulated previously by other authors.

[Cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung. A case report].

Fetal cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung is a rare pulmonary abnormality characterized by excessive growth of terminal respiratory structures. In newborn the malformation can be responsible of respiratory distress of variable degree with immediate or delayed onset after birth. The Authors present a case of cystic adenomatoid malformation diagnosed in utero by ultrasound discussing pathological, clinical, radiological and echographic aspects of the lesion.

Cloning and preliminary characterization of two satellite-like DNA sequences from the brown frog Rana graeca.

Two repetitive DNA sequences of about 0.29 Kb and 0.39 Kb have been isolated from Rana graeca genomic DNA by digestion with Asp718I and have been cloned in pTZ18R. Hybridization data obtained with DNA probes derived from these clones indicate that: i) both sequences are highly repetitive and species-specific; ii) the two sequences are partially homologous; iii) the 0.29 Kb sequence is present in the frog genome with the typical tandem organization of satellite DNA; iv) the 0.39 Kb sequence is presumably part of a longer repetitive sequence of satellite DNA.

[ECG monitoring in full-term infants. Analysis of the rhythm and variability of heart rate].

BACKGROUND: Heart Rate (HR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) depend on the neural control to the heart. HRV can be measured from 24-hours function. Little information is available on cardiac rhythm and on autonomic nervous control to the heart at birth. The aims of the study weew: 1) to study the cardiac rhythm in healthy newborn babies; 2) to asses the normal values for HRV at birth. METHODS: We studied 20 full term healthy newborn babies. Newborns underwent 24-hours ECG-Holter monitoring. Analysis was performed by a 750 A Del Mar Avionics Analyzer. We determined: Heart Rate (HR), number of extrasystoles, Standard Deviation of all R-R intervals over 24 hours (SDNN) and mean hourly HRV (HRVM). Results about HRV were matched with those of 50 healthy adults. RESULTS: 1) Average HR in the newborn babies was 108 (range: 55-198); we found high prevalence of supraventricular extrasystoles. 2) We determined reference value for HRV. SDNN was 55 +/- 17 ms in newborns. SDNN of adults was 132 +/- 25 ms (44% higher than in newborns; p < 0.001). HRVM was 46 +/- 14 ms in newborns and 76 +/- 14 ms (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: 1) Larger intervals of HR in newborn babies compared to literature data and an high prevalence of supraventricular arrhythmias in full term healthy newborn babies. 2) Reference values for HRV in newborn babies. The low values of HRV confirm the immaturity of autonomic cardiac control.
