The purpose of the study was to determine whether the social attractiveness of a young adult would be influenced by his or her dentofacial appearance. Black and white photographs of an attractive male, an unattractive male, an attractive female, and an unattractive female were obtained and modified so that, for each face, five different photographic versions were available. In each version, the face was standardized except that a different dentofacial arrangement was demonstrated. These were normal incisors, prominent incisors, absence of upper left lateral incisor, severely crowded incisors, and unilateral cleft lip. Eight hundred young adults were shown one of the twenty photographs and asked to estimate the represented individual's social characteristics along a number of bipolar scales. Each photograph was viewed by a different group of forty young adults, equally divided as to sex. Their impressions of the depicted individuals' social attractiveness were recorded on visual analogue scales. The experimental procedure was such that the effect and interaction of different levels of facial attractiveness, different dentofacial arrangements, sex of the photographed individual, and sex of the judge could be analyzed. Faces displaying a normal incisor relationship gained the most favorable ratings for eight of the ten characteristics examined, and in four of these differences across the range of dental conditions were statistically significant. These were perceived friendliness, social class, popularity, and intelligence. The prominent incisor condition was rated highest for compliance and honesty, while the condition representing a unilateral cleft consistently attracted low ratings. Background facial attractiveness of either the male or female stimuli was often more assertive than the individual dental condition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The three basic methods of canine retraction discussed all have their inherent advantages and disadvantages and all can cause problems. The retraction systems which slide canines along a relatively rigid archwire, would appear to have the advantage of achieving better controlled apical and crown movement but at the obvious cost of greater friction and binding than the sectional arch. Of course the direct headgear system to some extent avoids the consequences to the anchorage, but there again the force to the canine is only intermittent and movement consequently is slower than if elastic traction were applied. If sliding mechanics are used either with a J hook headgear to canines or elastic intra-traction from the molars, it would seem advisable to use a heavy round wire in at least a medium width bracket. To help decrease binding when using elastic traction, power arms would certainly seem to have a place, with the added benefit of patients having an accessible hook to change elastics themselves. If sectional arches are used it is advisable to use a heavy rectangular wire to maintain as much control as possible. Due to the compromise between horizontal flexibility and vertical rigidity already discussed, it is very easy to over-activate a sectional arch with its inevitable consequence of excessively tipping the canine and/or losing molar anchorage.
The necrobiotic disease granuloma annulare was studied with the electron microscope in an effort to develop a theory for the mechanism of development of necrobiotic connective tissue. That mechanism must provide for the disappearance of nuclei, the tinctorial change in collagen, and the retention of connective tissue outlines characteristic of necrobiosis. Our observations suggest that necrosis of histiocytes and fibroblasts with release of lysosomal enzymes is an important early event in the development of necrobiosis. Increased quantities of extracellular hyaluronic acid are also present in the earliest recognizable lesions. The combination of lysosomal enzymes and abundant hyaluronic acid in the interstitium results in swelling of collagen. Necrotic cellular debris is deposited about many collagen fibrils. This material seems to protect collagen from further destruction and may account for the preservation of connective tissue outlines observed at the light microscopic level. Some collagen fibrils not protected by cellular debris appear to be disrupted into constituent filaments. Crossbanded filamentous aggregates that resemble fibrous long spaced collagen were also observed and may represent an abnormal reassembly of disrupted collagen.

Examination of specimens from lesions of hyperpigmented tinea versicolor and from unaffected skin disclosed that the lesions showed increased stratum corneum turnover (8.2 +/- 0.6 vs 14.8 +/- 0.4 days, respectively), slight to moderate routine histological changes, such as acanthosis and perivascular inflammation, and dramatic electron microscopical changes (larger, singly distributed melanosomes vs small, packaged melanosomes, respectively). Brown hyperpigmentation in tinea versicolor appears to arise from an increase in melanosome size and a change in their epidermal distribution pattern.
