Isolation and distribution of Streptococcus suis capsular types from diseased pigs in Spain.

A total of 65 isolates of Streptococcus suis was recovered from various tissues of diseased pigs. Almost 96% of all these isolates could be categorized as one of capsular types 1 to 22 and 1/2. Capsular type 2 was the most prevalent and represented 53.8% of all isolates, followed by capsular types 1 (9.2%), 1/2 (7.7%) and 8 (4.6%). Brain-meninges, multiples tissues and lungs were the source of the majority of the isolates. A total of 37% of S. suis isolates, mainly from brain-meninges, were found in pure culture. The antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of S. suis isolates was determined.

[Changes in the flow of the stable renal graft following cyclosporin administration].

To evaluate whether oral CyA may produce changes in the renal vascular bed of the graft, a prospective study was made in 16 children with kidney transplant and normal renal function. A exam with echo-Doppler was realized pre and post two hour after CyA was administered. The doses of CyA was 6.1 +/- 2.7 mg/kg/days (3 doses). The results show that CyA produced in the children with kidney transplant an increase of vascular resistance (renal and interlobar) and a decrease transient of urinary flow. The finding changes in relation to time of administration of the CyA.

[Portal venous flow as a prognostic factor in biliary atresia. A preliminary study].

Early prognosis factors determination is an important objective after Kasai's operation for biliary atresia repair. Serologic test, postoperative biliary flow, histologic studies and clinical manifestations provides adjunctive information. Hemodynamic patterns in biliary atresia where described in 80's before liver transplantation. This preliminary report evaluates portal flow velocity, hepatic arterial resistance and portal calibre in these patients. A prospective sonographic investigation was performed in ten children with biliary atresia. Hemodynamic findings and hepatobiliary function were compared in order to establish prognosis. All our patients with good prognosis had hepatopedal portal flow greater than 14 cm/sg, and arterial resistance between 0.68-0.78. Four patients with poor prognosis had hepatopedal flow lesser than 14 cm/sg or hepatopedal flow an resistance in hepatic artery was greater than 0.80.

Methane production in goats given diets based on lucerne hay and barley.

An analysis of data from 102 energy balance trials carried out with Granadina goats, 32 with castrated males and 70 with lactating females, was made with the aim of establishing relationships between methane production and some nutritive attributes of the diet. The diets were based on pelleted lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay and barley and differed widely in the amounts and proportions of their ingredients. Methane production was measured by open-circuit respirometry. The between-animal variation in CH4 production was found to be +/- 8%. In absolute terms, CH4 production increased on increasing the intake of energy. The CH4 loss was 6.56 or 9.75 kJ/100 kJ of gross energy or digestible energy intake, respectively. The prediction of the CH4 production was best described from knowledge of the amounts of the "in vitro" digestible fractions (g/d) of both the neutral-detergent solubles (DNDS) and the neutral-detergent fibre (DNDF), according to the equation CH4 = 2.24 + 0.0299 DNDS + 0.0889 DNDF. The regression was highly significant and the residual standard deviation +/- 6.63 or +/- 20% of the mean. It was also found that on increasing the feeding level by one multiple of maintenance there was a reduction in CH4 losses of 1.51 kJ or 2.19 kJ/100 kJ of gross energy or digestible energy intake, respectively. The CH4 production (kJ/100 kJ of gross energy intake) was also related to the apparent digestibility of energy (D, %) determined at the level of nutrition close to maintenance. The equation was CH4 = -2.58 + 0.151 D. The regression was highly significant statistically.

Protein and energy requirements for maintenance of indigenous Granadina goats.

Sixteen adult castrated male goats of the Granadina breed, with initial live weights ranging from 26.0 to 33.3 kg were used in two experiments to determine their protein and energy requirements for maintenance. Digestibility, nitrogen and energy balance measurements were made during the experiments. Two diets, which were based on pelleted lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay alone or on this forage and barley, were individually given at about maintenance level once daily. Gas exchange was measured using open-circuit respiration chambers. Fasting heat production was also determined. By regression analysis endogenous urinary N and maintenance requirements for N were estimated to be 119 mg/kg body-weight (W)0.75 per d and 409 mg total N/kg W0.75 per d respectively. Fasting heat production was 324 kJ/kg W0.75. The energy requirement for maintenance was calculated by regression of energy balance on metabolizable energy (ME) intake and a value of 443 kJ/kg W0.75 per d was found. The overall efficiency of utilization of ME for maintenance was 0.73.

Protein and energy metabolism of lactating Granadina goats.

Twelve goats of the Granadina breed in mid- and late lactation were used in two consecutive years to determine their protein and energy requirements for lactation. The animals were individually fed on diets based on pelleted lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay and barley. A total of six balance experiments were carried out. Gas exchange was measured using open-circuit respiration chambers. Milk yield ranged widely from 0.649 to 1.742 kg/d in the first year and from 0.222 to 1.989 kg/d in the second year, a steady decline in milk output being observed as lactation progressed. Milk composition remained rather constant during the midstage of lactation, with an average content (/kg milk) for total solids, total nitrogen, fat and gross energy of 149.7 g, 5.39 g, 58.8 g and 3.59 MJ respectively. Total endogenous N, endogenous urinary N and maintenance requirement for N in lactating goats were estimated to be 244, 218 mg N/kg body-weight (W)0.75 per d and 478 mg total N/kg W0.75 per d respectively from regression equations. A constant efficiency of use of dietary N for milk N plus retained N of 51.0% was found. By regressing milk energy plus apparent body energy retention or loss on metabolizable energy (ME) intake, the maintenance energy requirement was estimated to be 401 kJ ME/kg W0.75 per d. When estimating the corrected milk yield as milk energy + (0.84 x negative energy retentio) + (1.05 x positive energy retention), regression analysis indicated that the overall efficiency of use of ME for lactation was 66.7%. Also, from a plot of apparent body energy retention v. milk energy yield, both expressed as a percentage of ME intake above maintenance, the efficiency with which ME was used to promote energy retention in the body during lactation was calculated to be 0.907 times that for milk secretion.

Senior-Loken syndrome (nephronophthisis and pigmentary retinopathy) associated to liver fibrosis: a family study.

We present two sisters with nephronophthisis and pigmentary retinopathy (Senior-Loken syndrome) and associated liver fibrosis. Clinical and histological findings are discussed, as well as the importance of family studies. A comparative analysis with previous published cases is made; we found only three other references with this triad. Our report underlines the need to investigate liver disorders in all patients with nephronophthisis and the existence of liver fibrosis as an element of the hereditary 'nephronophthisis complex.'
