Fifty strains of Candida isolated from 38 patients with oropharyngeal candidosis were tested in vitro for fluconazole susceptibility with a disk diffusion test and for determination of minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs). For 25 patients treated with fluconazole, the relationship between in vitro susceptibility and clinical outcome was analysed. A good correlation between in vitro results and therapeutic efficacy was found. In only one case was treatment failure associated with a susceptible strain. Mixed cultures of Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida species were not uncommon and, more interestingly, some samples contained different strains of C. albicans with varied fluconazole susceptibilities. Good agreement was observed between the two techniques used for fluconazole susceptibility testing.

The presence of antiganglioside antibodies is associated with several neurologic disorders. These antibodies recognize several epitopes, generally saccharides present in these glucolipids. The presence of antiGM antibodies has been described in certain clinical syndromes, the main one being multifocal motor neuropathy with and without conduction blocks. The frequency of antiGM1 class IgM antibody falls between 20 and 80% in this disease. Axon predominant Guillain-Barré syndrome is also associated with high titers of antiGM1 antibodies, although in this case class IgG is implicated. The most important association to date has been established between Miller-Fisher syndrome and the presence of antiGQ1b antibodies. Several authors have reported molecular similarities among these gangliosides and bacterial lipopolysaccharides, mainly Campylobacter iejuni. The principal aims in the study of antiganglioside antibodies are to establish their pathogenic role as well as the clinical usefulness of analyzing for them, and to discover new specificities that aid in the diagnosis and classification of neuropathies, whether they are predominantly motor disorders or chronic sensory ones.
A 34 year old woman with AIDS presented with adynamia and obsessive-compulsive behaviour. CT scan revealed bilateral toxoplasmic lesions involving basal ganglia. The neuropsychological picture resolved under specific antitoxoplasmic treatment. However, relapse of toxoplasmosis occurred in associating with the same behavioral changes. This is the first case of such a syndrome due to infectious lesions, and in which improvement through transient, was observed.

Energy charge, adenine nucleotide levels, and protein synthesis were studied during the transfer of rice seedlings from air to anoxia. Within minutes, the energy charge value dropped from 0.90 in air to 0.50 in the seed and 0.60 in the coleoptile after the transfer to a nitrogen atmosphere, and then increased to a value of 0.80 during the subsequent hours. The sum of nucleotides also dropped to 60% of the value in air in the seeds and to 30% in the coleoptiles. However, during the anaerobic growth of coleoptiles, a considerable increase in the nucleotide pool occurred. The incorporation of amino acids into proteins was measured at different stages in anoxic treatment. In rice embryo, we observed a considerable protein synthesis correlated with a high value of energy charge under anoxia. The analysis of labeled proteins by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed a modified pattern of polypeptides synthesized during anoxic treatment. Some of these proteins were intensively labeled and appeared to be induced by anaerobic treatment. Our data indicate that high metabolic activity occurs in rice embryo under anoxia, which can be correlated with a high energy charge value. These phenomena may be part of the mechanisms which permit the adaptation of rice embryos to anaerobiosis.
