Etiology of immune infertility.

Semen of mammalian species contains a built-in system to prevent immunologic sensitization of females against antigens of sperm and seminal plasma in spite of repeated coitus. This prevention of sensitization is likely to be due to the presence of a potent immune response inhibitor originating from one of the sex accessory glands of the male. The inhibitor has been only biologically characterized so far. Failure of this built-in system in the male results in immune response to seminal antigens in the female. This seminal immunity, when of the right kind and magnitude, results in clinical immune-fertility.

Stroke during pregnancy and puerperium in young females below the age of 40 years as a result of cerebral venous/venous sinus thrombosis.

One hundred and thirty-eight cases of cerebral venous/venous sinus thrombosis during the puerperium have been studied. Maximum number of cases (112 cases) occurred in the age below 30 years. Signs and symptoms appeared in most of the cases (72 cases) during the first 7 days of post partum period. One hundred and eleven cases were multipara. Commonest signs and symptoms were fever (85 cases); headache (66 cases), convulsions (64 cases), altered consciousness (57 cases), hemiplegia (60 cases), papilloedema (48 cases), etc. Carotid angiography done in 55 cases revealed block in middle part of superior sagittal sinus in 24, and localised, dilated and tortuous cortical veins in 5. A statistically significant rise in serum triglycerides, phospholipids, free fatty acids, blood platelet count, platelet adhesive index, and fall in blood fibrinolytic activity were found as compared with normals. These factors may be playing a role in the etiology of cerebral venous/venous sinus thrombosis during puerperium.

Inhibition of in vitro immune responses by a fraction from seminal plasma.

We studied the inhibitory effect of a fraction of bovine seminal plasma on in vitro lymphocyte responses to specific and nonspecific ligands. Seminal plasma was fractionated by Sephadex G-100 chromatography, and the inhibitory component was found to have a molecular weight of above 100,000 daltons. This fraction was devoid of lymphocytotoxicity and could inhibit, in a dose-dependent mode, both the primary antibody response of normal mouse spleen cells to the thymus-dependent antigen sheep erythrocytes and the one-way mixed lymphocyte reactions. Concanavalin A-induced proliferative T-cell responses were also inhibited by the same fraction. The inhibition of the T-lymphocyte responses to Con A was complete at suboptimal concentrations of the mitogen and could only partially be overcome at supraoptimal concentrations. Four other fractions in seminal plasma were also studied in this particular system, three being without effect and one being stimulatory. The inhibitory fraction was also found to inhibit the polyclonal B-cell responses induced by fetal calf serum. The importance of the present findings for the immunophysiology of reproduction are discussed.
