Protection for pregnant women in employment.

October 19 is the deadline for employers to implement improvements in maternity rights laid down by the Trade Union Reform and Employment Rights Act (TURERA) and the European directive to protect pregnant women's health and safety at work. Christina Potrykus outlines what the government and, separately, the general Whitley council have in store for women employees.

Review teams threaten local care.

The six specialty review teams set up to look at the provision of services across London have reinforced the move to close major London hospitals outlined by the Tomlinson review and in the DH report Making London better. The teams suggest major specialties are concentrated on a reduced number of sites. Christina Potrykus examines the implications.
