Canadian compensation law and vibration-induced white finger. A revised description.

Compensation for vibration-induced white finger (VWF) under Canadian law is reviewed. The historical information available in claims data is indicated with specific reference to British Columbia. The bases upon which the disease is recognized for compensation purposes in British Columbia and Ontario are described. Reference is made to the status of VWF in the compensation schemes of other Canadian provinces. The limitations of the current approaches are noted.

Exclusion of the alpha 1(II) cartilage collagen gene as the mutant locus in type IA osteogenesis imperfecta.

Using two restriction site polymorphisms within the structural gene coding for human type II collagen we have examined the segregation of this gene in three pedigrees with dominantly inherited osteogenesis imperfecta (Sillence type IA). We have demonstrated that the gene does not segregate with clinical expression of the disease and cannot, therefore, contain the mutation responsible for osteogenesis imperfecta in these families.

The refolding of denatured rabbit muscle creatine kinase.

1. The refolding of rabbit muscle creatine kinase (ATP:creatine N-phosphotransferase, EC 2.7.3.2) which had been denatured in 3 M guanidine hydrochloride was monitored by studying the regain of enzyme activity. Full activity could be regained provided that the residual denaturant concentration was less than or equal to 0.1 M. 2. The refolded product was shown by a number of criteria (CD, kinetic parameters and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) to be identical with the native enzyme. 3. The rate of regain of enzyme activity was studied as a function of protein concentration. It was found that 70% of the activity was regained in a rapid, first-order process. The remaining activity was regained more slowly. In the rapid phase the number of reactive thiol groups per subunit declined from four to two; the further decline to one per subunit occurred more slowly. 4. It was found that the presence of the reducing agent dithiothreitol was not necessary for the regain of full activity, provided that the chelating agent EDTA was present. 5. The subunit structure of the enzyme during refolding was studied using dimethylsuberimidate as a cross-linking agent. From these experiments, a pathway for the refolding process could be proposed.

Nodular fat necrosis in the feline and canine abdomen.

The radiographic appearance of nodular fat necrosis is described in ten cats and one dog. The most common radiographic sign was the presence of a focal mineralized circular to oval soft tissue mass in the abdominal fat as present in 9 cats. These masses had a distinct eggshell-like rim encapsulating the lesion. In one cat and one dog multiple masses were present, without radiographic signs of mineralization. Abdominal ultrasound was performed in three cats and one dog, findings included the presence of hyperechoic masses with associated acoustic shadowing, some with a hypoechoic centre. Almost all animals were old and obese. In three cats and one dog, changes were confirmed with biopsy or post mortem examination. Lesions having the appearance of those in this paper are most likely incidental findings and should not be confused with abdominal masses of neoplastic origin. Ultrasound can be helpful in identifying such lesions.
