The increased reaction time of antisaccades. What makes the difference?

The aim of this study was the detection of the parameters involved in an already defined phenomenon, namely that the reaction time of antisaccades is greater than that of pro-target saccades. Thus, we performed four different experimental paradigms: (i) The target location was unpredictable (to the left or to the right) but the type of saccade (pro-or anti-target) was predictable. The corresponding mean values of the reaction times were 231 +/- 40 ms for anti- and 179 +/- 50 ms for pro-target saccades. (ii) Both the target position and the type of saccade were unpredictable (437 +/- 91 and 412 +/- 85 for anti-and pro-target saccades, respectively). (iii) The target location remained predictable while the type of saccade was unpredictable (397 +/- 104 and 385 +/- 90 ms) and (iv) Both the target position and the type of saccade were predictable (185 +/- 67 and 180 +/- 61). The statistical analysis (ANOVA and post hoc comparisons) revealed significant differences only in the first two experiments. Our results suggest that the antisaccades present increased latency, compared to that of pro-target saccades, only under certain experimental conditions and especially when the target location is unpredictable. We presume that the antisaccade's latency prolongation is due not to the frontal lobe inhibition but to the double interference of the parietal lobe, which has to re-reconstruct the target location in space.

Association of serum nitric oxide levels with depressive symptoms: a study with end-stage renal failure patients.

BACKGROUND: Nitric oxide (NO) is a soluble gas produced by the activity of an enzyme found in neurons. It has been implicated in a great number of normal physiological functions (such as noradrenaline and dopamine release, memory and learning, regulation of the cerebrovascular system, modulation of wakefulness, modulation of nociception, olfaction, food intake and drinking) as well as pathologies (Alzheimer's, Huntington's disease, cerebral ischemia, stroke). Two reports have addressed the involvement of NO in depression. METHODS: The objective of the study was to examine the association between NO and specific depressive symptoms. For this purpose, in a sample of 28 end-stage renal failure patients (who have increased NO levels), we tested the hypothesis that the subgroup of patients with these specific depressive symptoms was differentiated from the patients without these symptoms with regard to serum levels of NO metabolites. The depressive symptoms were assessed using the Zung self-rating scale. RESULTS: Our study revealed an association of NO with the following depressive symptoms: sexual dysfunction, weight loss, psychomotor retardation, indecisiveness and irritability. CONCLUSION: The association between NO system and symptoms of depression does not necessarily imply a pathogenetic association between NO and depressive disorder. Further research is needed to verify these findings and study their possible pathogenetic implications.

Cognition in homozygous beta-thalassemia disease: a multichannel auditory event-related potential (P300) study.

Auditory Event-Related Potentials (AERP) were elicited in 25 beta-thalassemic patients, three days before and three days after a blood transfusion. The amplitude, latency and topographic distribution of P300 (P3) as well as N1, P2, N2 components were measured for the two assessment times. No significant differences in either amplitude, latency or topography were observed between the two situations, but thalassemic patients had significantly prolonged P3 latencies comparing to controls though none of them exceeded 3 standard deviations of the control mean values. Regarding P3 topography, 10 out of 25 patients showed a right centroparietal distribution area. It is concluded that information processing, as far as it is reflected in AERP components is impaired in thalassemic patients and blood transfusion have no significant influence in cognitive functions.

[Variation of the judgment of the fitness to specific work in a cohort study in construction industry].

This work shows the results of a study about variation of the judgement of the fitness to specific work in the construction industry in a year. In the 8.6% of the cases, after a year from the previous examination, it was necessary to express new limitations to the job activity mainly because of the presence of illness of the musculoskeletal or cardiovascular system. Considering only workers aged over 35 years, the percentage of variation after a year grows to 12.3%.

[Assessment of the efficiency of the first aid course among construction companies in the Province of Bergamo].

The aim of this project is to value, through a specific questionnaire, the effectiveness and utility of the professional training among the construction workers responsible of the First Aid. 48 construction firms, in Province of Bergamo, were examined and 100 first aid responsible were tested through to the questionnaire. The 21% of the subjects performed a practical first aid intervention. The 84% considers the professional training courses to be globally satisfactory, and one third underlines the necessity of an annual refresher course. This study tends to confirm the validity of this program of professional training, particularly in the construction trade, that is characterized by a high accidents rate.

Stargardt's disease with neurological involvement: case report.

The diagnosis of Stargardt's disease, in cases of macular degeneration associated with neurological symptomatology, has been questioned. A 23 year old man, suffering from well characterized Stargardt's disease since childhood, presented with progressive spastic tetraparesis and cerebellar involvement since the age of 18. The case is presented and the association between the two clinical pictures is discussed.
