The Indiana State Department of Health, Oral Health Services, randomly selected Indiana dentists to ascertain their compliance toward biological testing of heat sterilization units. Slightly more than 85 percent of the dentists surveyed were in compliance with the law regulating biological testing of heat sterilization units.
Since originally surveying Indiana dentists' knowledge of child abuse and neglect in 1990, numerous efforts have been made to help dental professionals improve their ability to identify and report instances of abuse. This article explains the purpose for the 1995 follow-up survey and why dental professionals' assistance is needed to complete the surveys. A second survey is scheduled for distribution six months after the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness (PANDA) efforts have been implemented to determine if those efforts are far having an effect throughout Indiana.
Although Indiana dentists are generally knowledgeable on the topic of child abuse and neglect, they need to be aware of their responsibilities as health care providers to identify and report child abuse and neglect. This is especially true when the abuse and neglect are identified in their patients. This article gives information on the types of abuse and neglect that are most commonly seen by dentists, indicators that should be "red flags" that abuse could be occurring and most importantly, how to report abuse.
Fluoride supplements for Indiana children are necessary for caries reduction where communal and well water tests show deficient levels of fluoride. The role of the physician in providing optimum preventive dental care to young patients is discussed. Also, the proper dental protocol for fluoride supplements is provided.

A broken mandibular denture was accidentally swallowed by a mentally incompetent patient. Dentists and nursing staff must be aware of the problems encountered in the care of such patients who wear removable dental prostheses. To aid in radiologic diagnosis, an opaque disk or foil should be used in the construction of an acrylic or plastic dental prosthesis. All removable dental prostheses should have additional patient identification that can be easily detected in radiographs.
