Inhibitory effect of 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylthymine 5'-triphosphate and 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine 5'-triphosphate on DNA polymerases from murine cells and oncornavirus.

This report compares the effect of the newly synthesized 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylthymine 5'-triphosphate with 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine 5'-triphosphate on the activity of DNA polymerases from mouse cells and oncornavirus. 1-beta-D-Arabinofuranosylthymine 5'-triphosphate inhibited all the activities of DNA polymerase alpha, beta, and gamma and viral DNA polymerase. The mode of inhibition of 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylthymine 5'-triphosphate as well as 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine 5'-triphosphate was competitive to the deoxynucleoside triphosphate with the same base. The inhibition constant (Ki) and the mode of inhibition of nucleotide incorporation varied with changes in the combination of the inhibitor, substrate(s), and enzyme species.

Serial scintigraphy of choledochal cysts using 131I-rose bengal and 131I-bromsulphalein.

Nine cases of congenital choledochal cysts are reported which were correctly diagnosed by 131I-rose bengal or 131I-bromsulphalein (BSP) serial scintigraphy. They were classified by scintigraphic patterns into two types depending on whether biliary obstruction was complete or incomplete. All but two showed incomplete obstruction. The correct diagnosis may be difficult to make by scintigraphy if complete biliary obstruction is present. In such cases the clinical findings and other diagnostic studies, such as angiography or ultrasound, should be carefully considered. Serial scintigraphy with 131I-rose bengal or 131I-BSP is nontraumatic, safe, and provides increased diagnostic accuracy. It is the examination of choice when choledochal cysts are suspected clinically.

Diagnostic significance of the pancreatic displacement with extrapancreatic oval-shaped low activity area on scintigram.

To aid in the differential diagnosis of upper abdominal tumors, pancreatic scintigraphy was performed in 62 cases. The findings were rather characteristic for pancreatic cysts; namely, pancreatic displacement and, adjacently, an oval-shaped activity area whose count was lower than background. Pancreatic displacement was observed with comparatively large retroperitoneal masses. Low activity areas were observed in cystic lesions. Both findings were noted in 7 (54%) of 13 pancreatic cyst cases. Among the 12 cases with these findings, 7 (58%) had pancreatic cysts.

Scintigraphic detection of hepatic metastases with 131I-labeled steroid in recurrent adrenal carcinoma: case report.

Abdominal scintigraphy using a new 131I-labeled steroid agent was performed on a 40-year-old women proven by surgery to have adrenocortical carcinoma. Considerable accumulations were observed at the sites of liver metastasis. Hepatic scintigraphy and autopsy findings revealed that the accumulation was more marked on the active cancer cells and only slight in the central necrotic tissue. Adrenal scintigraphy is valuable in the study of metastatic hormone-producing adrenal carcinoma.
