Assessment of patient satisfaction as part of a physician performance evaluation: the Fallon Clinic experience.

Patient satisfaction surveys were used as part of the physician evaluation process in a 300-member physician group practice with a largely health maintenance organization (HMO) patient population. The surveys were incorporated into the review process at the request of physicians who wanted to be evaluated by patients. Results were shared with physicians to identify problem areas for improving patient care. One year later, follow-up surveys showed improvement in patient ratings of participating physicians. In addition, physicians indicated that the surveys significantly improved the evaluation process.

Program helps residents make practice selection.

At the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, a curriculum for family practice residents has been developed to educate them about the aspects of various types of health care delivery systems. Christine Micklitsch, M.B.A., describes how the school accomplishes this curriculum through a process called "swings."

An educational program for training physicians in personnel recruitment.

Practice management curriculum must evolve to more thoroughly address the areas of personnel recruitment. A recent report by the Medical Group Management Association indicated that nearly half of a family practitioner's practice overhead goes for personnel. This paper presents a recruitment curriculum designed as a joint venture between a family practice residency program and a junior college medical assistant program. The outcome of this joint venture was unanimous agreement among the participants that the curriculum should be continued in both programs.
