Human growth hormone (hGH) gene deletion (6.7 to 7.6 kb) is one of the causes of isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD), named IGHD IA. IGHD IA, however, only accounts for about 10% of the total IGHD patients. Most IGHD is caused by unknown mechanisms. Here, hGH gene 5' sequences in three IGHD patients without hGH gene deletion were analysed to see if there was any mutation hindering the expression of the hGH gene.
240 cases of multi-infarct patients with more than two cerebral infarct lesions in CT findings were collected successively from 1991 to 1992. 42.92% of them were shown to have cognitive defect with a series of neuropsychological tests. Correlation of the occurrence of cognitive defect with the CT findings such as the location and extent of focal lesions as well as the presence of cerebral atrophy or subcortical degeneration were carried out. According to the results by multiple regression and factor analysis, the location and extent of the focal infarct lesions were not the primary determining factor for the occurrence of cognitive defect. It is, therefore, suggested that the term of ischemic or vascular dementia be used clinically instead of the so-called multi-infarct dementia.

Atrazine technical was evaluated for its embryotoxic, fetotoxic, and teratogenic potential in both rats and rabbits. The compound was orally administered at doses of 0, 10, 70, or 700 mg/kg.d to groups of rats on gestational d 6-15, while rabbits were administered doses of 0, 1, 5, or 75 mg/kg.d on gestational d 7-19. Maternal toxicity was observed at doses greater than or equal to 70 mg/kg.d in rats and at doses greater than or equal to 5 mg/kg.d in rabbits. Minor fetal effects, concurrent with maternal toxicity, were observed in rats at doses greater than or equal to 70 mg/kg.d. Among rabbits, fetal effects concurrent with severe maternal toxicity were only observed at the 75 mg/kg.d dose level. There were no adverse maternal or fetal effects in either rats or rabbits at the low dose levels. These findings indicated that pregnant rabbits were more sensitive than pregnant rats to the effects produced by atrazine technical and the compound was not teratogenic at maternally toxic dose levels in either species.

In order to assess the prevalence of the functional disability defined by activity of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) and associated factors in elderly Chinese, a population-based cross-sectional study was performed in urban, plain rural and mountain rural regions of Beijing. Of the 3440 subjects, 1707 are males and 1733 are females, with mean age of 71.4+/-7.7 years. Demographic, socio-economic and health aspects were obtained by trained interviewers. The results showed functional disability prevalence was 6.5% on ADL and 7.9% on IADL. Among the three representative areas in Beijing, the plain rural had the highest disability rate, increasing with the progression of age. Bathing and doing heavy housework were the two most difficult functional tasks. The functional disabilities were associated with gender and marital status. Our data suggest that plain rural elderly are most likely to generate functional disability, and bathing and doing heavy housework are two promising predictors to monitor the development of functional disability in the elderly.
