The changes occurring in the electrophoretic pattern of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteins in 37 children with nontumoral hydrocephalus, and the protein pattern of 12 children without organic neurological disease, were studied with polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. In nontumoral hydrocephalus protein was frequently increased in lumbar and ventricular fluid, in this condition, in intraventricular obstruction, the protein fractions showed a decrease in the prealbumin and an increase in the gamma-globulin fractions, and in extraventricular obstruction, the protein fractions showed a decrease in the prealbumin and an increase in the gamma-globulin and alpha 2-globulin fractions. With CSF proteins within normal ranges we found that in intraventricular obstruction, the proteins of the ventricular-CSF showed an increase in the prealbumin and/or albumin fractions, and in extraventricular obstruction, the proteins of the ventricular CSF showed an increase in the prealbumin and beta-globulin fractions, and the proteins of the lumbar CSF showed an increase in the prealbumin fraction. The diagnostic implications of these findings are discussed.

Infusions of epinephrine or levarterenol bitartrate into a rabbit nerve-muscle preparation decreased the force of the evoked twitch of anterior tibial and gastrocnemius-soleus muscles. The adverse effect of the catecholamines was not directly on skeletal muscle. The alpha-receptor blocking drug phenoxybenzamine hydrochloride prevented the adverse effect of the catecholamines if it was given prior to catecholamine infusions and unmasked a weak augmentation of twitch tension. Taken with the finding of abnormal accumulation of catecholamine in human dystrophic muscles, the production of an experimental myopathy resembling human dystrophy by the monoamine oxidase inhibitor pargyline hydrochloride, and the finding of excessive levels of catecholamines in the tissues and urine of dystrophic animals, these experiments support the hypothesis that catecholamines could play a pathogenetic role in some dystrophic diseases of muscle.
This report presents the results of interviews with 16 Mexican-American folk healers (curanderos and curanderas) in San Antonio, Tex. Curanderismo was found to be alive and well in San Antonio, though its practitioners tend to be older and its future unclear. Several salient characteristics of the practitioners were clarified such as the process of becoming a healer, referral practices, types of disorders treated, and treatment of the traditional folk illnesses. We take a basically conservative position on whether curanderos can ever be incorporated into the health care delivery system. However, this study confirms that the practitioners and their clients simultaneously utilize the folk medical system and the scientific medical system.

Two cases with Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome (PLS) are reported. They are two brothers belonging to a family which there is strong consanguinity. An autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance is suggested. Some pathological findings as congenital bronchiectasis observed in one of the patients as well as the PLS features are discussed and considered to be fortuitous defects. These observations are compared with those described in the literature.

The results of a 1973 mail questionnaire survey of Chicano medical students are reported. A response rate of 50 percent was achieved, and the results indicate that this group of medical students is similar to the majority of medical students in some respects but diverges widely in other areas, for example, parental socioeconomic status and language use. Differences in ethnic identification within the group were also found. California and Texas are educating the majority of the Chicano students surveyed.
In a poor rural community two groups of 17 mother-child units each were studied longitudinally. One group followed the usual feeding habits of the community which result in undernutrition of the child. The other group was provided food supplementation which was sufficient to provide an adequate diet for the child. From the 24th week on, the supplemented children developed a different pattern of interaction with mother and the environment: they slept less, barely used the cradle during the day, played more in the yard, and refused to be carried wrapped up. After the 36th week they received more stimuli and more deferences and rewards, not only from the mother but from the father as well. At 18 months the supplemented children moved about six times as much as the nonsupplemented and exhibited more complex behavior. They were more restless, playful, demanding, disobedient. It is concluded that better nutrition caused an increase in the activity of the child, which made him more demanding, which in turn increased interaction with his mother and established a feedback system, which in turn modified his behavior.
