A case of pleuropulmonary paragonimiasis that mimicked reactivation of pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia, and neoplasm occurred in a Laotian immigrant to Australia. The key to the diagnosis of this condition is awareness of the disease in persons from this region. The diagnosis was supported by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay testing. The patient was successfully treated with praziquantel.

The incidence and types of adverse reactions to rifampicin (in combination with isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol) have been studied in 86 South-East Asian refugees treated for tuberculosis in Australia. Most patients received daily therapy initially (mean 3.5 months) followed by supervised thrice-weekly treatment (mean 4.6 months). Minor adverse reactions occurred with similar frequencies during daily (5%) and intermittent (5%) treatment but in no case was modification of rifampicin dosage required. Withdrawal of pyrazinamide was necessary in two patients (2.3%) with clinical hepatitis.
A case of pulmonary ascariasis is reported for the first time in Australia. Because of increasing immigration from countries which have a high incidence of ascariasis (especially those of South-East Asia), and increasing travel to Asian countries, the awareness of this infestation as a cause of respiratory disease may be of great importance.
Three cases of pleuropulmonary amoebiasis are reported for the first time from Ghana. It is suggested that where facilities for identification of the causal agent are not available a therapeutic trial should be given with drugs effective against Entamoeba histolytica.
