Comparative studies on the glycoprotein composition of mammalian platelets.

1. The membrane glycoprotein composition of the blood platelets of 13 mammalian species has been compared by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. 2. A basic pattern of 2-3 predominant high molecular weight glycoprotein bands was observed, however species differences in their relative rates of migration and abundance were apparent. 3. Wide species differences in the number and rate of migration of the acidic glycopeptides released by trypsin digestion of washed platelet suspensions were observed following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the absence of SDS.

Factor-VIII-related antigen: measurement by enzyme immunoassay.

Factor-VIII-related antigen was measured, both by an enzyme immunoassay using a microplate method and by the Laurell technique, in normal people, patients with von Willebrand's disease, haemophiliacs, and obligatory haemophilia carriers. The enzyme immunoassay was simpler to perform and gave equally reliable and reproducible results. Many more assays could be carried out at any one time.

The effects of age and anaesthetic on the blood picture of the cuis, Galea musteloides.

Blood samples from 25 adult and 6 immature cuis were examined. There were slight differences in red cell parameters (RBC, Hb, PCV, MCV, MCH, & MCHC) between cuis and guinea-pigs. The total white cell count of cuis was much lower. The neutrophils of the cuis, as of the guinea-pig, had eosinophilic granules and were therefore termed pseudoeosinophils. Kurloff bodies were not present in mononuclear cells. There were more platelets in cuis blood compared with guinea-pig blood. The choice of anaesthetic did not influence any of the red cell parameters of the cuis, but may have affected the relative numbers of pseudoeosinophils, the platelet count and the percentage of reticulocytes. Immature animals had a lower erythrocyte count, a higher MCH and fewer platelets than adults.

Changes in blood catecholamine levels and blood coagulation and fibrinolytic activity in response to graded exercise in man.

Measurements of catecholamines, fibrinogen, factor VIII, thrombelastography, euglobulin lysis time and platelet adhesiveness have been carried out on venous blood obtained from normal males exposed to exercise on a bicycle ergometer at various work loads. Significant increases in adrenaline, factor VIII and fibrinogen were found only after exercise to exhaustion at 1500 kpm min-1 whereas the euglobulin lysis time was inversely proportional to the excercise load. There was no change in platelet adhesiveness. These findings support the results of studies using adrenaline infusions or adrenergic blockade which suggest that stress-induced increases in factor VIII are mediated via adrenergic stimulation but that activation of fibrinolysis is not dependent on adrenaline.

The production of cardiac hypertrophy by tri-iodothyroacetic acid.

Severe cardiac hypertrophy has been produced experimentally in rats by long-term, low-dose treatment with tri-iodothyroacetic acid. The dose used was insufficient to cause any apparent systemic or metabolic effect. It is suggested that similar iodinated substances in the blood in man, resulting from normal or abnormal thyroid hormone catabolism, may be causally related to some forms of cardiomyopathy.

Observations on the treatment of necrobacillosis in wallabies.

Clinical experience of 73 cases of necrobacillosis in red-necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) over a 6-year period is reviewed. Diagnostic methods and the medical and surgical treatment options are detailed. It is suggested that survival curves are necessary to assess the outcome of treatment.
