The study is based on 51 observations of fibromas of diameter 3 cm or more associated with pregnancy. The authors report the characteristics of this pathology, which occurs at a frequency of one in two in women over 35 years of age, half of whom are primiparae. The frequency varies with the size of the fibroma and falls between 0.3 and 2%. The circumstances of detection vary but echography both improves detection and allows the development of the fibroma to be monitored. The only frequent complication is aseptic necrobiosis (25% of cases), but it is usually latent or moderate. Abortions, low insertions of the placenta and faulty presentations are more frequent, especially where large fibromas are involved, but nonetheless 3/4 of such pregnancies come to term without any serious problems. Fetal prognosis is, therefore, excellent and perinatal mortality is close to that of a control population. The proportion of cesarean sections is high (30 to 75%) and depends on the circumstances, the size of the fibroma and the occurrence of dystocias. Myomectomy should remain exceptional during pregnancy but will be frequently used towards the end of a cesarean section; indications for hysterectomy on the other hand remain very limited.
Without aiming at expanding this complementary method of enteral feeding to any seriously operated on people, the authors restrict this nutritional process to the patients operated on upper mesocolon - stomach-duodenal and biliary-liver visceral lesions - whether they are neoplastic, ulcerous or lithiasic, without reminding its current use in the esophagus surgery.

Our group provided in 1981 evidence of a transmission of external voices, particularly the mother's voice, into the pregnant uterus in the human. The present study was carried out in order to investigate the actual perception and memorisation of this particular feature of the fetal environment. 25 infant newborns, 20 within the first hour of life and 5 during the second hour, with no post-natal experience of the mother's voice, were submitted to five females voices. The mother's voice rank was determined by randomization. The stimulus consisted in the first name of the newborn, repeated three times, with no associated visual or tactile perception. The behavior of the newborn was studied on videotapes by three of the investigators, without knowledge of the rank of the mother. Three levels of response were determined: no reaction, weak response (segmental movement) and complete response (orienting movement). The behavioral responses to the mother's voice were significantly different (p less than 0.01). The mother induced 36% of complete responses, when the unknown voices induced only 12% (p less than 0.001). Because the intonation of the mother was found, as expected, significantly warmer, this factor had to be controlled. After exclusion of cold voices, a significant difference persisted (45% of complete responses to the mother versus 16% to the other women, p less than 0.02). A fetal perception of external sounds in demonstrated. Moreover, evidence of a prenatal experience of the mother's voice, possibly involved in the process of attachment, is provided.

Factor analysis of the Faschingbauer Abbreviated MMPI (FAM) identified factors of Absence of Distress, Depression, Low Morale, Feminine Interests, Somatization, and Extroversion. These results are consistent with previous MMPI factoranalytic studies, with the first factor being a reflected factor of major psychopathological disturbance. This reflected factor is explained as a function of the elimination of clinically invalid profiles from the analysis. Implications concerning standard profile selection procedures are discussed in light of these results.

The authors discuss the nosological position and the aetiology of a complex of malformations affecting a boy, born at the end of a 40-week pregnancy with a weight of 1420 g and height of 42.5 cm, who died at the age of 3 1/2 months. The case presented an association of an acrocephalosyndactyly, phalangeal hypoplasias with anonychia, aplasia of the abdominal muscles, a genital hypoplasia with cryptorchidism and hypospadias, patches of lipodystrophy localised on the outside of the arms, at the folds of the elbow and the popliteal fossae. The autopsy revealed a large interventricular communication, absence of common mesentery and especially important cerebral anomalies (smooth brain, absence of interhemispherical suture, disorganization of the basal ganglia). The genetic study suggested a spontaneous abortion 2 1/2 months before the birth of the patient and revealed, in the mother, the presence of bilateral clinodactylies of the fingers and a unilateral syndactyly of the big toes.
