[Abnormalities of fibrin formation in benign viral hepatitis (author's transl)].

Abnormalities of fibrin formation were studied in 42 young adult patients with benign viral hepatitis. It was observed that there was a constant increase in thrombin time and reptilase time, evoking an abnormality of the second stage of fibrin formation, or the aggregation of fibrin monomers. This abnormality is not associated with the presence of inhibitors in the patients' serums, and is maximum at an alkaline pH. The hypothesis of an abnormality of the fibrinogen molecule, a dysfibrinogenemia, is the most likely cause, and this has to be confirmed by biochemical and immunochemical studies.

[Pneumococcal infections in military quarters (author's transl)].

A retrospective study on prevalence of pneumococcal in French military recruits of two military districts has been made in 1976 and 1977. Among 185,000 adults, 19 pneumococcal diseases were registered (0,1%). 15 were respiratory infections (10 acute pneumonia). The agent has been isolated of blood (the half) and of others samples : expectoration... (the half). In despite of geographical and climatic differences of two districts, the incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia is the same. The low prevalence of that infection results from the age, selection, and medical surveillance of the population studied.

[Congenital malformations of the inferior vena cava. Embryological, anatomical and radiological study (author's transl)].

Congenital malformations of the inferior vena cava are characterized by their diversity which is related to the complexity of the embryological development of this vessel. The authors review the embryogenesis and origin of the different segments of the inferior vena cava and describe the various types of malformation, including the causative embryological abnormality, ther frequency, possible clinical repercussions, and radiological aspects. Phlebocavography is essential for the identification of the various types of abnormality. Five different types of malformation are reported. Three of these are relatively rare (left inferior vena vaca, congenital membrane of the inferior vena cava, absence of the hepatic segment with continuation of the isolated azygos segment).

Determination of human liver cytochrome P-450 by electron paramagnetic resonance of liver biopsies.

Human liver cytochrome P-450 level has beenen determined by direct electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy at 77 degrees K of liver specimens obtained by surgical biopsy. A preliminary experiment with rat livers was performed in order to calibrate the intensity of the cytochrome P-450 EPR signal as a function of the cytochrome concentration obtained by the classical spectrophotometric method. 44 subjects have be examined. We found a cytochrome P-450 value of 21.5 plus or minus 11.2 nmoles per gram of liver in normal subjects. Variations of this level in some pathological liver states are discussed.

[Effect of rest on the course of viral hepatitis].

Discussions having lately raised the importance of rest in the treatment of viral hepatitis the authors report some studies made on the subject. They take into account 3 personal unpublished statistics analyzing the role of effort at 3 different stages -- in the acute phase, during convalescence and as an eventual factor producing aggravation. Although their results appear to be in contradiction with those found in American studies the authors show that the importance of rest in the initial phase is unanimously recognized and that there is no statistical evidence that such a prescription should be given up before the normalization of the main biological parameters. Furthermore though it is statistically proved that a certain activity between the 30th and 60th day does not affect the later course of the disease yet there is no element which allows to authorize the patient to resume his normal professionnal activity before the 60th day. Finally the lack of controlled studies does not allow any precise determination of the impact of effort in the determinism of an eventual aggravation. However according to the authors' experience physical tiredness can legitimately be suspected to have produced this aggravation in 47.06 % of cases of a secondarily aggravated hepatitis.
