Cephalometric radiography and computed tomography in infants undergoing major craniofacial surgery--a comparison.
Craniofacial growth after surgery in children is not completely understood. We have therefore formed a programme for pre- and postoperative studies with both roentgencephalometric- and computed tomographic investigations. This regimen results in overlapping information. Thus, an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods was made and exemplified in four patients. In our experience both cephalometry and CT are essential for the diagnosis, surgical planning and follow-up of surgically treated children with craniofacial anomalies. To minimize the radiation doses and the diagnostic procedures which in these cases often includes general anesthesia, patients with isolated, asymmetrical conditions such as plagiocephaly, might be followed with CT only, since roentgencephalometry can not add much information.
Experimental studies on absorbable vascular grafts for microsurgery.
In an experimental pilot study polyglycolic acid tubes in the rat were used as vessel grafts. 8 femoral arteries and 12 femoral veins were grafted in 15 animals, and followed up to 4 months. No artery was patent upon examination, while 6 out of 12 veins stayed open. A neointima was formed in the patent vessels and the vascular wall seemed to regenerate, while the tube graft was absorbed. It was concluded that, further developed, the polyglycolic acid tubes hold definite promise as instant and absorbable microvascular grafts.

[Treatment of menopausal symptoms with low doses of clonidine (author's transl)].
Clonidine (Dixarit), 0.025 mg three times daily, was given to 15 patients with menopausal, predominantly vasomotor symptoms. Both the number and the subjectively judged intensity of flushes and sweating decreased continually and in a statistically significant manner during the nine-week time of observation. Additionally, frequency and intensity of headaches, dizziness and paraesthesias decreased, while the other symptoms such as irritability, weak memory and depression remained unchanged. Clonidine in the stated dosage had no significant effect on blood pressure and heart rate. Mild side effects, especially dry mouth and slight sleepiness, were evident only in the first three weeks.
Surgical results in 477 basal cell carcinomas.
The hospital records of 406 patients treated for basal cell carcinomas were reviewed. Seventy-nine percent of the tumors were located to the head and neck area. All tumors were excised with a macroscopic margin of at least 3 mm. The surgical defects were closed primarily in 351 cases (74%), skin grafted in 108 cases (22%) and covered with local flaps in 18 cases (4%). Twenty patients (4%) required re-excision because of microscopically inadequate margins. Recurrence of the tumor was seen in 11 patients (2%).

[Insemination techniques and ethical problems (author's transl)].
Both homologous and heterologous insemination are being used increasingly in the treatment of sterility. The indication for such a procedure and also the question of the use of cryosperma is discussed and the question of preparation of the sperm and the additives to improve sperm motility. The ethical and legal problems of heterologous insemination are dealt with specifically.

Determination of wound strength for quantitation of skin damage after pressure ischemia. An experimental study in rabbits.
Rabbits skin folds were placed in plexiglass chambers enabling control of the skin fold temperature during cuff compression (200 mmHg) for 4 hours. In 10 animals the skin folds were kept at 36 degrees C - in another 10 animals the skin fold temperature was lowered to 10 degrees C. To quantitate the skin injury caused by the pressure ischemia a standardized wound was made, and immediately closed, after release of pressure. Control wounds were made in normal skin. Seven days later the mechanical strength of the wounds was tested by determination of breaking load. There was no significant difference in breaking load between the wounds made in normal skin and in the skin folds kept at 10 degrees C, whereas the breaking loads was significantly decreased in the wounds made in skin folds kept at 36 degrees C, i.e. normal skin temperature, compared with the controls. Thus, the results show that cooling may preserve the reparative capacity in skin subjected to pressure ischemia. It is assumed that this effect is related to a lowered cell metabolism during the ischemia. It may also be concluded that the pressure (mechanical) injury, being the same in both temperature groups, is less important than the ischemic injury.
Treatment of premature sutural synostosis.
Premature sutural synostoses are currently being treated at the Craniofacial Center at the Department of Plastic Surgery, University of Göteborg. A leading principle has been to release tethered parts of the skull and the facial skeleton in order to let the expanding brain mould the skeletal parts to an acceptable position. This can be achieved within the first year of life. When operating in later stages, the skeletal parts are wired in a semi-static position by a single osteosynthesis, still allowing expansion by the growing brain.
[Comparison of two methods for the determination of oestrogens in pregnancy urine (author's transl)].
A method based on the inhibition of hemagglutination for the determination of estriol-16-alpha-glucuronide is compared to the method of Kober and Ittrich. A sufficient degree of correlation (p less than 0.001) is found, when the daily estrogen production (Kober-Ittrich) in the last trimenon is compared to the estriol-concentration in the morning urine, analyzed by the hemagglutination method, which is suitable for the total estrogen determination too. Results below 23 microgram estriol/ml morning urine are pathological. Advantages of this method result from the fact, that no special equipment is required to carry out this fast assay.
