Mesencephalic multiple-unit activity during acquisition of conditioned pupillary dilation.

Multiple-unit recordings were obtained from the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, nucleus of Darkschewitsch and the superior colliculus of the cat during acquisition of classically conditioned pupillary dilation. Multiple-unit responses in all regions were enhanced by conditioning procedures. However, only the acquisition functions for the accessory oculomotor nuclei, i.e., interstitial nucleus of Cajal and nucleus of Darkschewitsch, were significantly correlated with the acquisition of conditioned pupillary dilation. These results were discussed in relation to the mechanism of autonomic control of conditioned pupillary dilation. It was concluded that inhibition of parasympathetic pupillomotor efferents via the accessory oculomotor nuclei may play a role in the acquisition of conditioned pupillary dilation.

Fasciitis complicating subcutaneous injection of interferon beta.

Data pertaining to 65 patients treated at the Health Sciences Center Hepatology Research Unit in Winnipeg, Manitoba describing local complications related to subcutaneous interferon (IFN) injection administered to treat hepatitis C virus infection are presented. Nine patients experienced local erythematous reactions at the injection region. No life-threatening complications were identified. One case of fasciitis complicating IFN beta injection - a complication not previously reported - was successfully managed with surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy. This case is a dramatic example of why sterile technique during infections must be adhered to.

The changing nature of work: workplace stress and strategies to deal with it.

Workplace stress is costing the developed and developing world roughly between 5-10% of Gross National Product per annum in sickness absence, premature retirement due to ill health and lost productive value in terms of services and products. In addition, it is costing the health services of countries an additional burden in terms of treatment and incapacity benefits. A three prong approach to stress management and prevention is provided, exploring primary interventions (risk assessment), secondary interventions (training and development) and tertiary interventions (stress counselling and support).
