Autosomal dominant inherited vitreoretinal dystrophy has been reported to occur as isolated ocular disease (Wagner's disease) or in combination with systemic manifestations (e.g., Stickler's syndrome). We examined five members of one family (three generations) and found vitreoretinal dystrophy and non-ocular signs in a mother and her two children. In the mother we also observed tractional detachment of the macula. In addition to routine ophthalmological examinations, we performed electrophysiological tests (ERG, EOG), adaptometry and magnetic resonance imaging of the head. Neurological examination revealed peripheral neuropathy in the mother and her children. We had no evidence that the neuropathy had a toxic or metabolic origin, and other genetically determined neuropathies were unlikely based on the clinical picture, MRI, and laboratory tests. Therefore, the neuropathy might be either a hitherto unrecognized feature of a variant of Stickler's syndrome or part of a yet unclassified hereditary vitreoretinal dystrophy with systemic involvement.
A new method is proposed permitting two- or three-dimensional Fourier transform imaging of protons coupled to 13C nuclei. In this way the spatial distribution of a preselected 13C resonance line can be imaged indirectly. The initial excitation as well as the detection of the signal are performed in the proton radiofrequency channel so that the utmost sensitivity is achieved. The principle is cyclic J cross polarization (CYCLCROP) for heteronuclear editing combined with a standard imaging sequence. The sequence has been implemented on a 4.7 T tomography system and successfully tested with a phantom as well as with biological objects with 13C in natural abundance.

The dispersion (frequency dependence) of the spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame, T1 rho, is considered for tissue characterization. Methods for the volume-selective determination of the proper T1 rho dispersion and for imaging of parameters characterizing this frequency dependence are described. On- and off-resonance versions of the techniques are demonstrated. In vitro studies of excised rat tissues and in vivo applications to mice with implanted adenocarcinoma are reported. T1 rho dispersion images show clear contrasts of the malignant tissue, whereas muscle tissue is completely suppressed. No contrast agent is required. The measuring time is only twice as long as that for conventional magnetic resonance images. The results suggest that the T1 rho dispersion is less susceptible to the biological variability than the absolute values of the relaxation times.
We monitored the immunohistochemically determined amount of surfactant-producing alveolar type II cells in human fetal lung using polyclonal antibodies against apoprotein B and C of human pulmonary surfactant. Lungs of 30 dead-born fetuses without lung affection aged between 15 and 38 weeks of gestation were evaluated and the surface density of surfactant-producing alveolar type II cells was determined by morphometry. In lungs of fetuses with a gestational age less than 22 weeks no relevant number of positively reacting cells could be found. Between the 22nd and 29th week a progressive increase with considerable inter-individual variability was observed. From the 30th week on the number of the type II pneumocytes appeared rather constant without further significant increase. We provide evidence that the immunohistochemical detection of surfactant-producing alveolar type II cells is useful for the determination of the age of unknown and especially fragmented fetuses: The lack of surfactant-producing alveolar type II cells in fetal lungs before the 22nd week allows a rather safe distinction between fetal lungs of higher age from those of lesser age. Between the 22nd and 29th week an age-dependent increase in the number of these cells occurs with wide inter-individual variability allowing only an approximate age determination. In particular, this may be an important piece of information in fragmented fetal corpses. Furthermore, the number of surfactant-producing alveolar type II cells provides additional information on pulmonary maturation and may thus be helpful in the estimation of a theoretical survival chance.
Considerations of the essential aspects of establishing diagnosis are explained fro a psychologist's point of view who has the possibility of observing the course of all children with cerebral injury registered early in the district polyclinic. Their qualitative performance parameters are evaluated, especially attention and the mother-child relation. Subsequently, we discuss the courses of development for 130 children who attended a rehabilitation nursery, and refer to constellations of symptoms which rendered it more difficult to establish early diagnoses.
Following bile duct ligation (DL) or bilateral nephrectomy (NX), phenol red accumulation in kidney or liver tissue, respectively, is reduced in rats of different ages. This is in contrast to in vivo experiments showing a compensatory increase of renal or hepatic excretion of phenol red in adult rats after DL or NX, respectively. The present study was performed to clarify this discrepancy. Three possible reasons were taken into consideration: 1. competition between accumulation of phenol red and bilirubin or bile acids; 2. influence of humoral factors occurring in serum of DL-rats on accumulation capacity; 3. changes of phenol red binding in homogenate of the kidney cortex or liver tissue after DL or NX. Ad 1. There exist inhibitory effects of bilirubin and cholic acid on phenol red accumulation. This inhibition is a competitive as well as a toxic one, apparently caused by a reduction of intracellular phenol red binding. Similar results have been obtained in in vivo experiments. During continuous infusion of bilirubin both renal and hepatic excretion of phenol red is significantly diminished. Ad 2. Incubation of tissue slices of control animals in serum of DL-rats does not indicate the existence of humoral factors reducing accumulation of phenol red after DL. Only in adult rats the plasma protein binding of phenol red is reduced after DL; in 10-day-old rats the binding capacity of the proteins for the dye is unchanged after DL. Ad 3. In young animals the phenol red binding on tissue homogenate is significantly reduced after DL or NX in kidney or liver; binding capacity of adult rats' tissue homogenate is unchanged after both operations. It can be concluded that renal and hepatic excretion capacity cannot be increased within a few hours after these blocking operations and obviously a functional reserve of the transport mechanisms does not exist.

Aerobic heterotrophic, pigment-producing lipolytic, coliform bacteria and E. coli were isolated at different sites of a small running water. After villages the bacterial numbers highly increased, whereas they decreased in the self-purification reaches between the villages. Significant differences between the numbers of heterotrophs at adjacent locations were observed. At relatively low polluted sites high correlation coefficients between the numbers of heterotrophs and those of E. coli were found.
The biological activity of the soil under a beech forest and a spruce forest was examined in respect to the CO2-production of the soil samples, the speed of vanillin decomposition, as well as the activity of the soil enzymes catalse, saccharase and phosphatase. Both soils indicated an indentical course of seasonal activity.
