Reengineering--setting a course for radical change.

When you pull up anchor and start reengineering, the seas can look a little rough. Here's what the strategist can expect when retooling some of the typical business processes that make up an average company: manufacturing, sales, information technology, back office/support services, and human resources.

Postnatal development of canine axial globe length measured by B-scan ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to document the development of axial globe length (AGL) in normal mesocephalic cross-bred dogs between 2 and 52 weeks of age, to determine a relationship between AGL and age, and derive an equation to predict AGL in normal mesocephalic cross-bred dogs. ANIMALS STUDIED AND PROCEDURE: The AGL of twenty normal mesocephalic cross-bred dogs was measured at 12 time points from 2 to 52 weeks of age using B-scan ultrasonography. RESULTS: The mean (+/- SEM) AGL increased from 12.65 mm (+/- 0.18) at 2 weeks of age to 19.52 mm (+/- 0.18) at 52 weeks of age. The correlation between AGL and age was evaluated by fitting possible variables to a regression pattern. A linear model of natural logarithmic-transformed value of AGL (mm) and age (week) was established. Side (left or right eye) and gender did not correlate with development of AGL. CONCLUSIONS: A reverse transformation of the formula can be used to predict AGL in mesocephalic cross-bred dogs: AGL = 10.847 * age in weeks 0.1653.

The psychiatric treatment plan.

How the treatment planning process is developed and documented in clinical settings is often influenced by various accreditation processes. As healthcare organizations attempt to incorporate written findings and verbal recommendations of surveyors, an incremental approach to the treatment plan often results. The authors describe how they attempted to alleviate this problem by devising a conceptual framework for the treatment planning process using current HCFA and JCAHO standards and data obtained by reviewing treatment plans from almost 100 psychiatric hospitals.

Developing and implementing a comprehensive program for children and adolescents with eating disorders.

TOPIC: Treatment of eating disorders in children and adolescents across a continuum of care. PURPOSE: To describe the development and implementation of a comprehensive pilot program for children and adolescents with eating disorders. SOURCES: Published literature and clinical experience. CONCLUSIONS: The pilot program to provide comprehensive care to children and adolescents has been successful. As of November 2000, the inpatient modal eating disorder census has been 4 (highest = 10, lowest = 1). With the focus on prevention and early intervention, the multidisciplinary team continues to educate the public and providers.

A biomechanical analysis of solvent-dehydrated and freeze-dried human fascia lata allografts. A preliminary report.

UNLABELLED: This study compares the basic mechanical properties of two groups of commercially available fascia lata allografts processed by different means (solvent-dehydrated and sterilized via gamma radiation, and freeze-dried without secondary sterilization). The results reveal significantly (P less than 0.05) higher stiffness, higher maximum load to failure, and higher maximum load per unit width of graft with the solvent-dried as opposed to the freeze-dried fascia lata. Subsections of individual solvent-dried specimens were also more uniform in their mechanical properties than those of the freeze-dried allografts. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Fascia lata is used as a graft material in a variety of orthopaedic procedures. Allograft fascia lata offers an increased cross-sectional area of material and eliminates the morbidity associated with the harvesting of autologous tissues. However, the structural uniformity of such large grafts has been questioned. Processing techniques used in the sterilization and storage of such grafts is varied and represents a potential source of variation in the mechanical properties of allograft specimens. The results of this study suggest that a commercially available solvent-dehydrated form of fascia lata provides a more suitable grafting material than freeze-dried specimens obtained from tissue banks.

The influence of humidity on the residual action of benzene hexachloride (BHC).

In controlled humidity chambers in the laboratory differences in the absorption velocity of BHC were observed depending on the substrate sprayed. While BHC is no longer used in Chagas' disease control this data could have relevance to spraying houses in a control programme with other insecticides.

The influence of building materials on the residual action of BHC.

Residual insecticide activity of BHC vapors from various building materials in controlled humidity chambers in the laboratory were significantly different. Laboratory-reared, first instar nymphs of Dipetalogaster maximus were exposed to vapors of BHC which were being released from the treated surfaces of building materials taken from Mambaí, Goiás.

Effect of 131I-induced hypothyroidism on indices of reproductive function in adult male dogs.

Hypothyroidism has been cited as a cause of infertility, abnormal semen quality, and poor libido in people and animals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of hypothyroidism on variables indicative of reproductive function in adult male dogs. Nine normal dogs were randomly assigned to 2 groups. Hypothyroidism was induced with 131I in 6 dogs. Three dogs remained untreated, normal, and euthyroid. Thyroid hormone concentrations, body weight, clinical signs, and reproductive function were determined for each dog every 3 months for 2 years. Reproductive function was assessed by determining daily sperm output, total scrotal width, spermatozoal motility and morphology, libido, and serum testosterone and luteinizing hormone concentration responses to exogenous gonadotropin-releasing hormone. The 131I-treated dogs developed clinical and laboratory signs of hypothyroidism. In the hypothyroid dogs, serum concentrations of thyroid hormones were consistently below the reference range and were significantly lower than that in the euthyroid dogs. There was no difference in reproductive function between the hypothyroid and euthyroid dogs. The results of this study show that 131I-induced hypothyroidism does not affect indices of reproductive function in adult male dogs.

A scanned, focused, multiple transducer ultrasonic system for localized hyperthermia treatments.

A commercial diagnostic ultrasound scanner (Octoson) was modified for performing hyperthermia treatments. The temperature elevations were induced in tissues by four large, focused ultrasonic transducers whose common focal zone was scanned along a computer controlled path as determined from B-scan images. The system is described and the results of preliminary tests demonstrating some of its capabilities are given. Extensive tests with canine thighs and kidneys were performed. The blood flow to the kidneys was controllable, and thus tumours having different blood perfusion rates could be simulated. The results showed that the system is capable of inducing a local temperature maximum deep in tissues (up to 10 cm was tested) and that tissues with high perfusion rates could be heated.

Food intake by brain-injured humans who are in the chronic phase of recovery.

This study examined whether survivors of traumatic brain injury differ from normal, non-injured controls in the regulation of food intake in their natural environment. Caregivers of 20 brain-injured subjects and 20 controls recorded in diaries: caloric intake, time of meals, subjective hunger ratings, and the number of persons present during meals for 7 consecutive days. Brain-injured subjects ate larger meals and more total (overall) calories per day compared with controls. In addition, the presence of other people during a meal, or social factor, was a significant predictor of meal size for the control subjects, but not for the brain-injured subjects. Brain-injured subjects also differed from control subjects in their response to pre-meal stomach content.
