Sulphated proteoglycans were isolated using a dissociative method of extraction. Cerebrum accounted for the major portion of proteochondroitin sulphate in brain, whereas the brain stem fraction contained over half the proteoheparan sulphate. Chemical characterization studies demonstrated that heparan sulphate from cerebellum contain more N-sulphate glucosamine residues.

L-forms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were induced and cultured on a medium supplemented with carbenicillin. Morphological studies of the passaged variant revealed the presence of a triple-layered cell wall similar to that found in the parent species. Furthermore, the L-form was found to be more susceptible to gentamicin, kanamycin, tetracycline and colistin sulphate. Chemical analysis of the lipopolysaccharide fraction showed a difference in phosphorus content, and changes in cell wall envelope fatty acid content were also exhibited. It is suggested that these differences may influence the transport of certain antibiotics through the cell wall.

The damage threshold during aortic valvuloplasty was determined in 12 normal swine subjected to inflation of oversized dual balloons. Catheters with combined balloon diameters of 1.2-2.0 times the aortic annulus were selected. Following completion of the procedure, the animals were sacrificed and examined for pathology. With combined balloon diameters less than or equal to 1.7 times the aortic annulus, there was no gross or microscopic damage. In animals with combined diameters equal to 2 times the aortic annulus, there was rupture of the aorta. This data provides further basis for the selection of catheter sizes in dual balloon aortic valvuloplasty.
Incorporation of Na235SO4 by ovine brain Ficoll-prepared synaptosomes were studied as a function of time, temperature and substrate concentration. The rate of uptake obeyed Michaelis-Menten kinetics and apparent Km value of 4.4 mM Na2SO4 was determined. In the presence of p-hydroxymercuribenzoate a reduction in sulphate uptake was noted which suggests that thiol groups may possibly be implicated in the uptake mechanism.
