Scintigraphy using both Tc-99m phosphonate and Ga-67 was performed in 55 cases of untreated primary and secondary tumors of the head and neck. In 21 patients with primary tumors of jaws, eye, tongue, or parotid gland, Ga-67 scintigraphy visualized the primary tumor in all cases and metastases in 12. Scintigraphy using Tc-99m phosphonate disclosed primary bone involvement in 12 cases and skeletal metastases in two. In eight of 13 patients with metastatic lesions of jaws and skull, bone scintigraphy showed skeletal metastases. In seven of these patients, Ga-67 scintigraphy detected the primary tumor and in 11 cases detected metastases. Bone scintigraphy disclosed skeletal metastases in six of 21 patients with malignant neck tumors. In 13 of these patients, Ga-67 scintigraphy visualized the primary tumor, whereas it showed metastases in seven. It is concluded that Ga-67 scintigraphy should be used in the investigation of untreated primary or secondary malignant tumors of the head and neck. Bone scintigraphy may be indicated as an additional study in selected cases only.
One hundred sixty-nine children suspected of having malignant disease were examined by Ga-67 scintigraphy. In 99 children with untreated diseases at the time of examination, abnormal accumulation of Ga-67 was found in 51 patients, including 40 with malignant tumor. Forty-three negative results were obtained in children with benign disorders. Five false-negative results were obtained in patients with neuroblastoma of the adrenal gland. In 70 children with malignant diseases treated before the examination, abnormal accumulation of Ga-67 was seen in 40 patients, including 38 with malignant disease and two with no clinical evidence of recurrence. Normal results were obtained in 30 patients, including 11 still suffering from malignant disease. The results of Ga-67 scintigraphy in all of the children were evaluated qualitatively. For the final diagnosis of malignant disease, diagnostic specificity was 86% and diagnostic sensitivity 79%. The prevalence of malignant disease was 56%. It is concluded that Ga-67 scintigraphy should be used for primary visualization and control of malignant tumors in children.
Whole-body scintigraphy with both 99mTc-phosphonate and 67Ga was performed on 92 patients suspected of primary bone tumors. In 46 patients with primary malignant bone tumors, scintigraphy with 99mTc-phosphonate disclosed the primary tumor in 44 cases and skeletal metastases in 11, and 67Ga scintigraphy detected the primary tumor in 43 cases, skeletal metastases in 6 cases and soft-tissue metastases in 8 cases. In 25 patients with secondary malignant bone tumors, bone scintigraphy visualized a single lesion in 10 cases and several lesions in 15 cases, and 67Ga scintigraphy detected the primary tumor in 17 cases, skeletal metastases in 17 cases and soft-tissue metastases in 9 cases. In 21 patients with benign bone disease positive uptake of 99mTc-phosphonate was recognized in 19 cases and uptake of 67Ga in 17 cases. It is concluded that bone scintigraphy should be used in patients suspected of primary bone tumors. If malignancy is suspected, 67Ga scintigraphy should be performed in addition.
A restrospective comparison between CT and scintigraphy with 99mTechnetium-phosphate (Tc-P) and 67-Gallium-citrate (GA) has been performed in 8 children with malignant extracranial tumours and in 9 children during concurrent control after treatment. CT was superior to scintigraphy in the primary tumour evaluation with regard size, type and invasiveness of the tumour. In the same way, regression, progression or local recurrence after treatment was better visualized by CT than by Ga and Tc-P scanning. In the detection of secondary spread of the tumour, CT is most sensitive of the modalities in the examination of the lungs, whereas Tc-P schintigraphy still is the method of choice to study metastases in the skeleton.
Elevated levels of alpha-1-fetoprotein (AFP) were found in the amniotic fluid of a 36-year-old woman in the 15th week of gestation. Because of this and the results of repeated ultrasonography, abortion was induced. An anencephalic fetus with trisomy 18 was delivered. The possible correlation among neural-tube defects, chromosomal abnormalities, and level of AFP is discussed.
Bone scintigraphy has been performed two or more times within a year on 12 patients: four with cherubism, four with fibrous dysplasia, and four with osteomyelitis of the mandible. In cherubism abnormal scintigrams were found only in the regressive period with new bone formation, while in fibrous dysplasia, abnormal scintigrams were found in all cases, even in patients where the disease was expected to be stationary. In osteomyelitis the changes in the scintigrams corresponded to clinical and radiological changes. Bone scintigraphy may be used as a differential diagnostic aid in doubtful cases of cherubism and fibrous dysplasia, or to reveal any lesions of other bones. The method cannot be used for differentiating between fibrous dysplasia and osteomyelitis, but bone scintigraphy may be useful in the early diagnosis or the late control of osteomyelitis in the jaws.
One hundred and twenty-two children suspected of having malignant disease were examined by 67Gallium scintigraphy. True-positive detection was obtained in 22 patients before treatment and true-negative in 22. False-negative scans were obtained in 5 children with primary adrenal neuroblastoma. Local recurence and/or metastases were detected in 29 of 58 children previously treated for malignant disease. For malignant disease, diagnostic sensitivity was 78% and diagnostic specificity 79%. It is concluded that 67Ga scintigraphy should be used for primary visualization and control of malignant tumors in children.

Measurement of alpha1-fetoprotein by rocket immuno-electrophoresis in cord serum from a consecutive series of 422 newborn infants showed a negative correlation with gestational age. The coefficient of correlation was divided by 0.70 for girls and divided by 0.74 for boys. For a given alpha1-fetoprotein concentration in cord blood the confidence limits for prediction of gestational age for both sexes were calculated to +/- 24 days. It is concluded that determination of alpha1-fetoprotein in cord serum is of limited help in the evaluation of maturity.

Twnty-six children suspected of having malignant diseases were examined by Gallium-67 scintigraphy. The scintigrams were pathologic in the 20 children with final diagnoses of malignancy. The lesions visualized by scintigraphy were 12 primary tumors and eight cases of local recurrence or dissemination of cancer. Gallium-67 did not accumulate in a hematoma of the liver, and scintigraphy was normal in five children with no clinical evidence of tumor recurrence. Several cases are reported and the clinical value of 67Ca scintigraphy for detection and control of childhood neoplasms is emphasized.
Sixty women in the third trimester of pregnancy were examined with 113mIn placental scintigraphy because of bleeding. In 24 of the cases, the scintigraphic procedure was initiated by application of a Meyers ring containing 113mIn round cervix. In the other cases, the fundus and the symphysis pubis were marked by means of a small radioactive source. Complete placenta praevia was correctly detected in 8 cases and marginal placenta in 4 cases. The scintigraphic localization of the placenta was correct in all the women where the ring was used, whereas when the external marked was used, seven errors occurred. The authors therefore recommend this new technique in order to facilitate the evaluation of the scintigrams.
Bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-polyphosphate or 99mTc-pyrophosphate was carried out in 54 children suspected of bone disease. Signs of skeletal metastases were recognized in 13 children by scintigraphy whereas X-ray examination showed lesions in only 10 of these. In 5 children with primary osteosarcoma, three cases of fibrous dysplasia, and 4 cases of osteomyelitis, the lesions were clearly demonstrated by scintigraphy. Abnormal accumulation of radioactivity in soft tissue lesions was observed in primary adrenal neuroblastoma, Hodgkin's granuloma, and metastatic Burkitt's lymphoma. Several cases are reported, and the value of bone scintigraphy in children is discussed.
In a prospective investigation, the predictive value of liver scintiphotography was evaluated in 107 consecutive patients operated on suspicion of intra-abdominal cancer. Scintiphotography was performed by means of a Pho/Gamma HP scintillation camera after intravenous administration of 99mTc sulfur colloid. The final diagnoses were obtained within 10 days after scintiphotography by laparotomy or autopsy. The predictive value of an abnormal scintiphoto was found to be 57%, and the predictive value of a normal scintiphoto was 91%. It is concluded that scintophotography is helpful in the preoperative evaluation of patients with suspected intra-abdominal cancer, especially in order to rule out the presence of liver metastases.
