[Plain abdominal film after contrast-enhanced CT; re-evaluation by using iohexol].

Abdominal radiographs after enhanced CT were evaluated using non-ionic, low osmotic contrast media, iohexol. Comparison were made with iopamidol (non-ionic, low osmolality) and diatrizoate (ionic, high osmolality). Iohexol gave good opacification in nephrogram and persistent opacification till 45 min, after enhancement as well as iopamidol. Abdominal radiographs after enhanced CT using iohexol is useful for total observation of the urinary tract. There is no significant difference of serum BUN and creatinine between before and after enhancement in 21 iohexol.

[A case of olfactory neuroblastoma with exuberant hyperostosis].

Olfactory neuroblastoma is a malignant, slow growing, neurogenic tumor that originates in the olfactory mucosa of the upper nasal cavity. We report a case of olfactory neuroblastoma that presented with exuberant hyperostosis of the facial bone during the course. This unusual radiological finding has been discussed with literature review.

No evidence for linkage between the loci for coagulation factor XIII-A and HLA.

The linkage analysis between the locus for coagulation factor XIII-A (F13A) and HLA region genes (HLA-A, -C, -B) was performed. In males, the maximum of lod scores between F13A and HLA was 0.33 at 0 = 0.30, and in females lod scores were negative at all values of 0. The results provided no evidence for close linkage between F13A and HLA genes.

Management of peripheral nerve injuries.

The choice between repair or reconstruction in the management of nerve injury, and the determination on timing and the type of neurorrhaphy technique are clinical decisions that should be based on thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of nerve injury, the physiology of nerve healing, and the anatomy of peripheral nerves. The formulation of a treatment plan should be individualized.

Isolation and characterization of MMS-sensitive mutants of Neurospora crassa.

Seven different mutants that show high sensitivity to MMS killing were isolated and mapped at different loci. One group, mms-(SA1), mms-(SA2) and mms-(SA6), showed high sensitivity to MMS but not to UV or gamma-rays. Another group, mms-(SA4) and mms-(SA5), showed extremely high sensitivity to UV and MMS. And mms-(SA3) and mms-(SA7) were moderately sensitive to both UV and MMS. Mms-(SA4) and mms-(SA1) were identified as alleles of uvs-2 and mus-7, respectively, which had been previously isolated. The mms-(SA1), mms-(SA6) and mms-(SA7) strains were barren in homozygous crosses, and the mms-(SA5) strain was barren in heterozygous crosses. The mms-(SA1), mms-(SA3) and mms-(SA5) strains showed high sensitivity to histidine. In summary, at least two new loci involved in the repair of MMS damage have been identified. The possibility that some of these new mutants are in new repair pathways is suggested.

Relationship between myoelectric signals and blood lactate during incremental forearm exercise.

Five men performed incremental forearm exercise by using a modified hand grip dynamometer while external loads (1 Kg metal plate) were added at each succeeding minute until volitional exhaustion occurred. Myo-electric signals were recorded from the belly of the flexor carpi radialis-palmaris longus. By the use of an LSI-11/23 minicomputer, the digitized data were processed for integrated EMG (IEMG) and mean power frequency (MPF) by means of 512 point fast Fourier transform. Data from individuals revealed that venous lactate correlated highly with IEMG (range: 0.977 to 0.857, P less than 0.001) and MPF (-0.960 to -0.862, P less than 0.001) during the incremental exercise. Group data revealed that none of the parameters tested showed any significant changes between the onset of lactate threshold (LT), i.e., the onset of abrupt increases in lactate, and one minute prior to LT. However, when these parameters were tested between LT and one minute after LT, significant differences were observed for venous lactate (t = 3.16, P less than 0.05), IEMG (t = 3.02, P less than 0.05) and MPF (t = 3.84, P less than 0.05). It was concluded that analysis of myo-electric signals may provide a non-invasive measure of lactate threshold after which dynamic equilibrium of lactate production and utilization becomes unbalanced during the incremental forearm exercise.

[CT diagnosis of uterine cancer].

Computed tomographic feature of uterine carcinoma were described based on our own experience of 40 cases (cervix 35, body 5) and on the review of the recent articles. It was found to be not always possible to detect tumor infiltration not only at the cervix but lateral extension to the parametrium on CT. CT was quite effective, however, the diagnosis of iliac-paraaortic lymph node metastasis and invasion into the bladder and/or the rectum. Increased fibrous tissue and perirectal fat were the commonest postirradiation changes seen on CT. CT was the only measure to clarify surgical complication in some cases.

[Close classification method of undetermined cases of trophoblastic disease (author's transl)].

With the improvement of recovery ratio of trophoblastic disease by means of primary chemotherapy, undetermined cases of trophoblastic diseases, whose morphological examination has not been conducted, have increased. The respective sickly constitutions of these cases are extremely complicated, and we have deviced a new close classification of these cases from clinical standpoint. For the purpose, we have chosen out the following items.: A. Major subdivision 1. Types of antecident pregnancy. 2. Duration between the antecident pregnancy and the commencement of chemotherapy. 3. Urinary hCG secretion pattern following molar pregnancy. 4. Following treatment of hydatidiform mole. B. Minor subdivision 1. Urinary hCG titer at the commencement of chemotherapy. 2. BBT pattern. 3. Chest x-ray findings. 4. PAG. 5. Clinical signs. 6. Development of focuses (clinical). 7. Necessary reasons for chemotherapy. These items are expressed respectively by figures. This close classification method is based on the combinations of these figures. The authors believe, this method will enable the easy classification of early chemotherapy examples and will present a strong key for the analysis of enormous cases.
