[Influence of light through the eyes on metabolism and hormones].

The eye plays a double role: on the one side it is the optic camera, on the other side independent of the optic path ways it is the light receptor which stimulates the retino-hypothalamique pathway of the endocrine-visceral system. To determine this influence, we compared the metabolisme (water balance, blood sugar and blood cell count) as well as the hormones (ACTH, Cortisol) of fifty patients with bilateral almost total cataract, before (practically blind) and after cataract surgery (regain of light). There was a significant difference between the metabolic and hormonal values before and after cataract extraction, reaching physiologically normal levels due to the stimulating influence of light after the operation.

[A new in vitro test of endothelial viability. Vital staining using Janus green with spectrophotometric analysis of the color extract].

A new in vitro technique has been developed to measure by simple photometry the amount of Janus Green extracted with absolute alcohol from isolated corneas after vital staining. The amount of stain corresponds to the percentage of damaged endothelial cells and is a reliable parameter of endothelial viability. More rapid and easier to perform than the usual cell counting of devitalized cells this technique may be used to study the endothelial damage induced e.g. by experimental surgery, intraocular solutions, IOL material, cornea storage solutions.

Hand-over-mouth behavior management technique in a solo pedodontic practice: a study.

The hand-over-the-mouth technique (HOM) was studied in a single-dentist pedodontic practice. The study included the frequency of its use relative to the patient's age, sex, previous dental experience and history of a significant medical experience. Observations were also made of the nature of subsequent appointments. HOM was used for almost 10 percent of the patients studied in less than 2 percent of the total number of dental appointments. It was used most often for three-year-old patients, especially female. In the majority of cases (89 percent), it was used on a single occasion and that incident was followed by appointments of a positive nature.

Automated morphometric endothelial analysis combined with video specular microscopy.

Contact and noncontact specular microscopes were tested in combination with a highly sensitive video residual-light camera and with the Kontron IPS (Image Processing System). The video information is recorded with a video recorder or with the IPS frame grabber, a digital image storage system. Examples of experimental and clinical applications are demonstrated. Nine linear and structural parameters are analyzed. Two endothelium-typical parameters are presented, which allow topological as well as hexagonal-specific geometric endothelial single-cell analysis.
