Comparison of spontaneous and experimentally induced canine prostatic hyperplasia.

Spontaneous prostatic hyperplasia in the beagle appears to progress with age from a glandular to a cystic histological appearance. Prostatic hyperplasia can be induced in young beagles with intact testes by treatment for 4 mo with either dihydrotestosterone or 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol, alone, or with either of these steroids in combination with 17 beta-estradiol. In contrast, the induction of prostatic hyperplasia in young castrated beagles, in which the gland had been allowed to involute for 1 mo, requires the administration of both 17 beta-estradiol and either 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol or dihydrotestosterone. Testosterone and 17 beta-estradiol, either singly or in combination, did not produce the hyperplastic condition in intact or castrated beagles. The experimentally induced prostatic hyperplasia is identical in pathology to the glandular hyperplasia that occurs naturally in the aging dog with intact testes. However, cystic hyperplasia was not produced by any of the treatments tested in young animals.

Indications, complications and prognosis for repeat penetrating keratoplasty.

A review of 47 repeat penetrating keratoplasties in 29 eyes showed the most frequent indications to be Fuchs' dystrophy, bullous keratopathy, and keratoconus. The most common postoperative complications were edema, glaucoma, and vascularization. Ninety other surgical procedures were performed in 26 of the 29 eyes. Final vision was no worse than 20/300 in 26% of the group. It is suggested that repeat grafting should be continued in the absence of contraindications.

Studies of the effect of 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17alpha-diol in the canine prostate in vivo.

Adult beagle dogs, castrated one month previously, were treated with 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17alpha-diol (total dose 300 mg) over a period of one month. Examination of the prostate after treatment showed no significant change in size, weight or histological appearance from the castrate dog prostate. Subsequent administration of 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol (300 mg) over the same period of time resulted in restoration of the prostate size, weight and histological appearance to that of the normal intact dog prostate. It is concluded that exogenously administered 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17alpha-diol does not promote prostatic growth in the castrate beagle dog.

Inhibition of testosterone 5 alpha-reductase by and antiandrogenicity of allenic 3-keto-5,10-secosteroids.

(4R)-5,10-seco-19-norpregna-4,5-diene-3,10,20-trione(II), A 3-keto-5,10-secosteroid which is an irreversible inhibitor of delta 5-3-ketosteroid isomerase was tested for its possible antiandrogenicity in the hamster flank organ test. The organs of female animals topically treated with 4 microgram of testosterone propionate (TP) for 4 weeks enlarged in size and showed pigmentation resembling adult males. When compound II was applied concomitantly with TP, androgenic stimulation was completely blocked and the flank organs remained small like those of female animals. These results suggest that compound II may be a useful anti-androgen when applied topically. It may well act mainly by inhibition of the formation of 5alphs-reduced metabolites was markedly inhibited.

Photocoagulation in the diagnosis of senile retinoschisis.

In five of seven patients treated with argon laser photocoagulation, lesions were placed around retinal breaks and in the center of the breaks directly on exposed pigment epithelium. In a sixth patient, the lesions were placed through an area of atrophic detached retina on the bare pigment epithelium. In the last patient, the lesions were placed in the center of a large outer wall hole in an area of senile retinoschisis directly on bare pigment epithelium. The white reaction to photocoagulation, previously thought to differentiate between retinoschisis and retinal detachment, was produced in the eye with a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. The white reaction also was produced in the center of retinal breaks where the photoreceptor layer was not in contact with the retinal pigment epithelium. Photocoagulation was not a definitive test, and must be evaluated with other clinical findings.

Thirteenth Annual Lenna Frances Cooper Memorial Lecture: Nutrition education-what comes next?

Education for normal nutrition must include preventive measures against the principal health problems of the day, namely cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. Preventive nutrition denotes a sufficiency of all nutrients for normal metabolic processes and the avoidance of excesses of calories, salurated fat, cholesterol, simple carbohydrates, and refined foods. The dietitian is uniquely qualified to interpret nutritional science and to apply it to daily food choices by people and must assume leadership in all program development for nutrition education, including nutrition education programs in the nation's schools. For effective, preventive nutrition education, new perspectives are needed to overcome the limitations of the simplistic, traditional approach.
