Ketoprofen was assayed in tissues of surgical patients after mechanical grinding of the tissue in liquid nitrogen; the fine powder obtained allowed the drug to be determined by HPLC in the same way as for liquid samples. The method was applied to the study of ketoprofen diffusion into the tonsillar tissue of 15 patients after a single intramuscular injection of ketoprofen (100 mg). A correction was made for blood contamination after hemoglobin determination.

The erythrocyte ferritin content was measured in 183 healthy subjects in age from 4 to 68 years; 80 were male and 103 were female. In children between the ages of 4 and 12 years there is no significant difference in the mean value between boys and girls. In females the erythrocyte ferritin concentration is independent of age. After 12 years of age the erythrocyte ferritin content is higher in men. Reference intervals were determined by the two quantiles 0.05 and 0.95. The reference interval is 3-24 age by cell in boys between 4 and 12 and females between 4 and 63; the reference interval is 5-38 age by cell in males between 13 and 68 years of age.

We studied a group of 64 patients undergoing cardiac surgery for the occurrence of post-transfusion hepatitis during a follow-up period of 5 months. They received blood units (packed red cells in saline-adenine-glucose medium and/or fresh frozen plasma exclusively) from 447 volunteer donors. Post-transfusion hepatitis was identified in 5 patients: 1 patient had cytomegalovirus hepatitis and the remaining 4 cases were defined, by exclusion, as non-A, non-B hepatitis (with prevalence and incidence rates of 80% and 6.25% respectively). We found no statistically significant differences between the numbers of transfused blood product units in patients who developed non-A, non-B hepatitis as compared to those who did not. Our analysis of the predictive effectiveness of alanine aminotransferase and anti-HBc antibodies screening in blood donors to prevent non-A, non-B post-transfusion hepatitis led to the following conclusions: we failed to confirm the association between anti-HBc in blood donors and enhanced risk of non-A, non-B hepatitis in recipients since no case developed among patients receiving blood products from anti-HBc positive donors. So, 20 donors (4.5%) would have been discarded without any reduction of the incidence of non-A, non-B hepatitis. we could not confirm nor exclude the possibility that screening donor blood for elevated alanine aminotransferase levels would have reduced the number of non-A, non-B hepatitis in recipients.
We prospectively studied the incidence of post-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis in 64 cardiac surgery patients: 4 (6.25%) developed non-A, non-B hepatitis after an incubation period of 4-10 weeks. Units of blood products from donors seropositive for antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) were not associated with a greater risk of non-A, non-B hepatitis in recipients than units from seronegative donors. Our data indicate that donor blood anti-HBc testing is of no value as a screening method to reduce the incidence of post-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis.

In the Newt Pleurodeles waltlii (2N = 24), trisomics for chromosomes 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 3 or 4, and double trisomics for 9 and 10 and for 10 and 11 have reached adulthood. The particular phenotype of each is described, as are the genital apparatus of the sterile aneuploids (trisomics 9, 10, and 3 or 4 and double trisomics 9 and 10, 10 and 11) and the axial skeleton of fertile trisomics (8, 10, 11).
The results of a comparative quantitive study of morphology in eudiploids and three types of trisomics of adult Pleurodeles waltlii are discussed. General morphologies are specified by mean measurement values. Statistical bivariate analysis demonstrate differential growths and give some new details on sexual dimorphism. Trisomies 8 and 11 have opposite effects on growth allometries, while no significant effect of trisomy 10 has been detected. As a rule, characters of trisomics are more variable than those of diploids.
In the newt Pleurodelles waltlii, males and females trisomic for chromosomes 8, 10 and 11 are fertile. Crosses between such trisomics and diploids were carried out. Progeny analysis showed that an extra chromosome is transmitted to half of the gametes of both males and females trisomics. The extra chromosome apparently causes interference in the regular mechanics of meiotic division, so that trisomics throw nonparental aneuploids and polyploids in their progenies. Moreover, some descendants develop chromosome anomalies during embryonic life ; thus, the progeny of trisomics include diploids, parentaltype trisomics, and embryos with new chromosome anomalies. Morphology and chromosome anomalies of the embryos are compared. A possible explanation for the secondarily acquired anomalies are discussed.
In a trisomic male the metaphases of the first and second divisions of the meiosis are analysed. Some metaphases present special aspects. They are interpreted as the result of a chromatid disjunction during the first division of the meiosos. The homology between the meiotic and mitotic chromosomes is in part completed.
