Duration differences: attentional demand or time error?

Underwood (1975) has used judgments of duration to compare the attentional demands of learning and recall. His study is critically discussed and two further experiments are reported. In experiment 1 subjects spent 50 s learning a list of words and a further 50 s either trying to recall them or learning another list. In contrast to Underwood's subjects both groups judged the first interval to have been longer than the second. In experiment 2 three separate groups of subjects spent 50 s learning a list of items (nonsense syllables, unrelated words, or related words, as in Underwood's experiment) and then a further 50 s trying to recall them. Once again the first interval was judged to have been of greater duration. The implications of these findings for the use of duration judgments as a measure of attentional demand are discussed.

Hypercalcaemia due to the coexistence of parathyroid adenoma and myelomatosis.

A 70-year-old woman presented with back pain due to vertebral crush fractures and was found to have hypercalcaemia. Investigation revealed evidence of both primary hyperparathyroidism and Bence Jones myeloma and this was subsequently confirmed at necropsy. This is the first description of a case in which the simultaneous occurrence of both diseases was reliably established. The case illustrates the difficulty in identifying the cause of hypercalcaemia in some patients, and emphasises the need to consider the diagnosis of myeloma in all cases of hypercalcaemia.

Serological distinction between DR antigens and lymphocyte activating determinants.

The Burkitt lymphoma (BL)-derived, HLA-DR antigen positive B cell line, EB1, is a consistently low stimulator in MLC. A rabbit antiserum raised against the strongly stimulating BL line DAUDI, after appropriate absorption with EB1, inhibits MLC stimulation by both B cell lines and allogeneic lymphocytes, whilst lectin-induced proliferation is not significantly affected. Indirect immunofluorescence and 125I-staphylococcal protein A binding to cells pre-incubated with this antiserum suggest that the antigen is present on both peripheral B and T cells, as well as on B lymphoblastoid and myeloma lines. We suggest that this antiserum is directed against lymphocyte activating determinant(s) (LADs) and that these are distinct from the serologically defined DR antigens.
