[Historical development of surgical wisdom tooth extraction].

Surgical removal of the wisdom teeth is a routine procedure nowadays. Only at the end of the nineteenth century the use of local anesthesia together with the development of radiology led to the establishment of surgical dentistry. Especially the technique of removal of the lower third molar was totally changed and modified many times, depending on the position of the wisdom teeth. First hand instruments were used; later, mechanical devices for bone resection and tooth splitting were employed. Since the 1950s, highly dangerous infections have become rare, thanks to the use of antibiotics. Many publications concerning incision procedure, bone resection and tooth splitting marked the following years.

[Antigenicity and resorptive behavior of the usual gelatin preparations and of dry fibrin foam].

Immunofluorescence studies of Gelastypt, Gelfoam, and Fibrospum showed species-specific, protein-dependent antigen characteristics. Additional experimental studies using guinea pigs revealed that, after subcutaneous implantation, these materials do not lose their antigen characteristics during the resorptive process. Remnants of subcutaneously implanted material could be demonstrated intracellularly (macrophages) in the spleens of the experimental animals four weeks later.

[Animal experimental studies on the biocompatibility of resorbable gelatin sponges and dry fibrin foam].

Histologic specimens taken from the implantation site and the regional lymph nodes up to four weeks after subcutaneous implantation of Gelastypt S (Höchst AG), Gelfoam (Upjohn), and Fibrospum (Promonta) into the upper hind leg of guinea pigs were examined. Similar tissue reactions were observed with Gelastypt S and Gelfoam; the reactions did not differ appreciably from those normally occurring in the context of wound healing. The predominance of round cell infiltrate and the appearance of giant cells in connection with Fibrospum may indicate an immunogenetic potency of the substance. No signs of beginning resorption could be observed four weeks later.

[Concepts and findings in dentistry in medical dissertations from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries].

This historical paper deals with medical dissertations from the second half of the 18th century which deal with stomatology. 30 of the 100 consulted dissertations were translated from latin with great differences in scientific content and style, because they dated from the 16th to the 18th century. The views of normal anatomy and physiology of that time are described. Strange views were held on the embryological development. Apart from toothache, dentitio difficilis in children, aphtous stomatitis, cleft palates and the respective therapies were described. The scientific content of those dissertations was way backward when compared to contemporary text book literature.
