Lateral transcranial radiography of temporomandibular joints. Part II: Image formation studied with computerized tomography.

Two series of radiographs of 15 subjects (30 TMJs overall) were compared in order to evaluate the reliability of OLTP carried out with different techniques: individualization of incidence through radioscopy (OLTP/fluo) or through the submental vertex method (OLTP/sub). Reasons for formation of noninterpretable radiographs (prevalently with OLTP/sub) and for diagnostic errors in judging condyle position were evaluated for each technique through a CT scanning study of the same patients. The reasons for the wide range of constancy of results found in OLTP/fluo are also discussed. Overall the study demonstrated reliability of the OLTP carried out with the technique of individualizing the incidence through fluoroscopy.

Lateral transcranial radiography of temporomandibular joints. Part I: Validity in skulls and patients.

Left and right TMJs of 10 skulls and 15 patients (50 TMJs) were studied by means of OLTP and tomography to establish optimal condylar position in the glenoid fossae at maximum dental intercuspation. Two OLTP examinations of each joint were made and individualized by submental X ray and by fluoroscopy. A comparison of the recorded data showed fluoroscopy to give the better result. According to this study, OLTP individualized by fluoroscopy may be a useful tool in the determination of condylar position.

[Percutaneous biopsy (PB) of solid thoraco-abdominal formations with instrumental guidance. The authors' experience].

The results are reported of 283 percutaneous biopsies performed on solid thoracic and abdominal masses. Indications to biopsy are examined at first, which are relatively limited in number if compared to other authors' opinion on the subject--i.e., when the tumor cannot be characterized with any other methodology, or in case of neoplasms whose histological type is to be known in order to plan therapy. The techniques employed are then evaluated, with a special emphasis on the needle caliber and the guidance method (US, radioscopy and CT). Correct samplings have been obtained in more than 90% of cases. Minor complications were observed in less than 10% of cases, while major complications were totally absent. In conclusion, percutaneous biopsy proves useful in those cases where exam indication is respected and an accurate selection is previously performed.

Evaluation of a rapid method to exclude the presence of certain enteric pathogens in stool specimens.

A new commercial method intended to exclude the presence of Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and Yersinia enterocolitica and to presumptively identify Salmonella isolates within 2 h after primary isolation from stool specimens was evaluated. This system is marketed in Europe as API Z and in the United States as Rapid SST. The strip consists of five pairs of cupules for the screening of five lactose-negative colonies. The first cupule of each pair detects the presence of five enzymatic activities, whereas the second serves to maintain the strain for additional testing if necessary. A total of 197 fresh isolates from stool specimens and 217 stock cultures of Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and Yersinia enterocolitica were tested, with the API 20E system as a reference method. In the stool specimens, 77.3% of the bacteria could be excluded from further workup for the presence of these organisms within 2 h. Over 97% of the stock strains and each of three fresh Salmonella isolates tested produced a reaction pattern corresponding to a correct presumptive identification. This reaction pattern was not produced by any isolate other than the Salmonella isolates. The API Z system can be used as a screen for the presence of Salmonella and Shigella spp. and can provide an accurate presumptive identification of Salmonella isolates within 2 h after primary isolation.

In vitro susceptibility of Salmonella strains to cefotetan and other cephalosporins.

The in vitro activity of cefotetan, a recently developed cephamycin, is investigated by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and by the agar diffusion method against 212 strains of Salmonella (36 species). Cefotetan shows good activity against all strains of Salmonella tested and it is more active than other cephalosporins, in particular, on S. wien.
