Quality of life as an outcome-based evaluation of coronary artery bypass graft critical paths using the SF-36.

The Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) may prove to be a useful tool to evaluate the impact of critical paths (path) on discharged patients. Its ability to measure effects of the path must first be evaluated. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the path using the SF-36, and evaluate its ability to measure path outcomes. Subjects cared for through a coronary artery bypass critical path completed the SF-36 and were compared against a similar baseline sample. The specificity to measure the path influence was inconclusive, because comorbidities and activity restrictions present misleading results in the measurement of disability in its current use.

Quality of life and productivity in nurses reporting migraine.

A random sample survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of migraine in nurses and to study its effect on quality of life and productivity. Of the 10,000 nurses sampled, 2949 returned the questionnaire for a response rate of 29.5% The majority (99%) of respondents were employed and worked in hospitals (60%). According to the International Headache Society (IHS) criteria, 17% of the sample (n=495) were classified as having migraine. An additional 25% (n = 750) suffered severe headaches but did not meet IHS criteria for migraine, and the remaining 58% (n = 1704) were classified as not having either migraine or severe headaches. The migraineurs had significantly reduced work productivity and quality of life compared to both the severe headache and the nonmigraine nonsevere headache groups. This study will increase awareness and sensitivity of the profession to its colleagues who are migraine sufferers.

A comprehensive approach to preparation for NCLEX-RN.

As nurse educators, we believe that the incidence of failure on NCLEX-RN can be reduced by counteracting the circumstances likely to produce failure. A twofold approach to preventing failure is described: an academic advisement and development program and a post-graduation workshop designed to assist graduates to prepare for NCLEX-RN. Evaluation data on the two approaches is presented.
