The aim of this study was to determine the effect of subgingival scaling and root planing on healing of the distal surface of second molars following extraction of third molars. Twenty-eight patients with contralateral erupted third molars and pocket depths greater than or equal to 3 mm on the distal surface of the second molars participated in this study. Measurements of supragingival bacterial plaque, bleeding on probing, pocket depth, and relative attachment level were performed at baseline and 2 months after treatment. Extraction of contralateral third molars was carried out simultaneously. The experimental site received thorough scaling and root planing of the distal surface of the second molar, while the control site received extraction alone. Experimental sites showed significant improvement in all clinical parameters assessed compared to the control sites. In conclusion, periodontal lesions on the distal of second molars can be significantly improved following scaling and root planing after extraction of third molars.
This study investigated social class differentials in cancer mortality in São Paulo county, Brazil, for the period 1978 to 1982. A measure of socioeconomic status based on education was used, and cancer risk by level of education was estimated by a case-control approach in which other cancers were considered as controls. For most cancers, the socioeconomic differences in risk were similar to those found in western Europe and North America. For lung cancer, however, the highest risk was observed in men and women with the most education. Other cancers related to tobacco--cancer of the larynx, pharynx, and esophagus--showed a negative association with education. The differences between social classes in consumption habits of alcohol and maté and the use of black tobacco are probably responsible for these contrasting patterns. For breast and cervix uteri cancer the social class patterns were similar to those found in developed countries--a positive relationship for breast and a negative one for cervix uteri cancer. The magnitude of the differences observed between social classes for these cancers was frequently greater in South America than in the United States or western Europe.
We report a patient with bilateral uncemented total hip replacements in whom a deep infection on the second side may have been caused by a transient bacteraemia associated with a revision operation for deep infection on the first side. Both hips were successfully treated by one-stage exchange.
One hundred and fifteen patients with schistosomiasis mansoni were studied: 31 with a normal chest x-rays and no signs of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and 84 with x-rays compatible with cardiopulmonary abnormalities (73 without symptoms and 11 with symptoms of PH). The chronic pulmonary form (CPF) without pulmonary hypertension is frequent and benign. There was no association between the CPF and the hepatosplenic form (HEF), nor with age, sex or patient origin. Pulmonary hilum alterations were the most common x-ray findings, followed by parenchymatous abnormalities (micronodules). The CPF was associated with a low to medium worm burden. The incidence of CPF with pulmonary hypertension is low but usually related to significant heart abnormalities. It is more common in patients over 12 years, with the HEF of the disease and has no correlation with sex, race or place of birth. Chest x-ray alterations are seen with similar frequency both in parenchymatous and hilar regions.

Sixty fresh adult livers were obtained from cadavers together with celiac trunk, head of the pancreas and superior mesenteric artery. We have found a single right hepatic duct in 13(21.6%) of the cases and a multiple right hepatic duct in 47(78.3%). A single left hepatic duct was found in 3(5%) of the cases and a multiple left hepatic duct in 57(95%). A median hepatic duct was found in 18(30%) of the cases, out of this 2(3.3%) was multiple median hepatic duct.
