[Recent traumatic lesions of the male anterior urethra. Apropos of 17 cases].

Seventeen cases of anterior urethral injuries are presented. The authors define the management of these lesions: emergency IVP and suprapubic catheter drainage; after three to five days, retrograde and voiding urethrography and surgical repair: end to end anastomosis when the rupture is complete (8 cases with 7 good results, 1 fair result), in case of partial rupture, surgical repair should be preferred (2 cases with 2 good results); the other alternatives, urethral catheter (2 cases), or suprapubic catheter drainage with delayed treatment of stricture (3 cases), appeared to be less comfortable, contusions must be treated conservatively.

[Immunofluorescent demonstration of pancreatic polypeptide (PP) in pancreas and digestive tube of bony and cartilaginous fish].

When antisera specific against bovine PP (BPP) were used, immunoreactive parenchymal cells were observed in the endocrine pancreas and in the gastro-intestinal tract of the teleost bony fish Cottus scorpius, as well as in the pancreas of the elasmobranchian cartilaginous fish Squalus acanthias. Of the two principal islets of Cottus, PP-cells were located selectively to that in the pyloric region.

[Mortality in the emergency surgical management of upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage due to ulcers and gastritis].

A retrospective study of 68 patients with acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding (excluding bleeding from esophageal varices) revealed that all patients had emergency surgery. The factors influencing the mortality and the recurrent bleeding have been sought. The overall mortality was 29.5%. Age of patients and type of surgical procedure did not affect the mortality raate, while chronicity of lesions and their duodenal location had a favourable influence. Most deaths were due to hypovolemic shock and its complications. Gastric resection with vagotomy is the operation of choice for control of bleeding. The authors present a brief review of the literature and stress the importance of early diagnosis and resuscitative measures, as well as the need for aggressive surgical intervention.

Survival in colorectal cancer.

The authors studied the hospital records of 258 patients with colorectal cancer diagnosed between 1965 and 1974 at l'Hôpital du Saint-Sacrement, Quebec and computed expected and relative survival rates to adjust for deaths from other causes. Life-table methods based on full intervals only were used to analyse survival. The patients (138 men and 120 women) ranged in age from 24 to 96 years (mean, 64.9 +/- 12.7 years). The 5-year relative survival rate expressed as a percentage was 48.6 +/- 4.7 for the total group and 64.1 +/- 5.6 for patients in stages A, B and C of Dukes' classification. The overall operative mortality rate of 2.7% compared favourably with that reported elsewhere. Among patients with cancer of the sigmoid colon or rectum (the most readily detectable), the diagnosis was made at stage A in one out of nine and at stage D in approximately one out of four. Despite the introduction of universal medical insurance in Quebec in 1970, there has been no significant trend towards earlier diagnosis.

Mediastinopleuroscopy: a new approach to the diagnosis of intrathoracic diseases.

With the advent of modern therapy, it has become essential to obtain a tissue diagnosis in all cases of pulmonary and mediastinal disease. Since it is often necessary to resort to thoracotomy as a final step in making such a diagnosis, we have sought a procedure that is simpler while capable of providing the same information. Through a standard cervical mediastinoscopy incision, the mediastinum is first explored; if the diagnosis is not obtained, the mediastinal pleura is digitally opened and lung or pleural biopsies are taken. In the course of 1,100 mediastinoscopies since 1969, 275 pleuroscopies have been done. We were able to obtain a tissue diagnosis in 102 (78%) of 131 patients with bronchogenic carcinoma, in 92 (91%) of 102 with benign pulmonary disease, and in all 20 (100%) with pleural disease.

Measurement of cell growth by a rapid U.V. spectrophotometric method.

A spectrophotometric method for measuring mammalian cell growth in culture is described. The attached cells were solubilized in 2N sodium hydroxide and the absorption was measured at 225 nm. The technique is sensitive to about 3000 cells per Petri dish and a linear relationship was obtained between the number of cells and the absorption at this wave length. The method is rapid and the solubilized material can be recovered for liquid scintillation counting when needed.
