[Direct radiographic magnification of the hands. A critical analysis].

The value of direct magnification radiography of the hand and the wrist has been studied in 128 patients affected by rheumatic diseases. Only in a small group (3.17%) magnification determined a higher percentage of correct diagnosis; in the 17.06% of cases direct magnification radiography provided useful increase in information but did not change the diagnosis correctly reached by conventional techniques. In most cases (79.76%) magnification provided only a better image quality but no more information helpful for the diagnosis, because of the high level achieved by conventional techniques. Therefore direct magnification radiography must be used only in selected cases and not as routine radiographic technique.

Bone Diseases↗

[Radiologic changes of the hands in psoriatic rheumatism].

The radiological features of the psoriatic arthritis, already known in the literature, are reviewed by the authors. On the basis of their own record (33 patients), they underline 3 peculiar features of the disease: thickening of the soft tissue involving the whole finger, three joints involvements of the same finger, association of subchondral proliferation and periostitis.

[Scrotum transillumination: method and results (author's transl)].

The results obtained from a continuous series of 48 patients have been critically appraised. The report of the diaphanoscopy appeared pathognomonic only in the event of hyper-diaphanous cystic formation and of varicocele. In all other types of pathology the report was aspecific, requiring a knowledge of the clinical picture for its interpretation, and sometimes absent (neoplasia in the initial phase). For these reasons the diaphanoscopy of the scrotum may be considered as part of a clinical examination and not as a complete (self sufficient) experimental examination.

[Respiratory function in uremic patients before and after dialysis].

Respiratory function investigations (spirometry, capillary haemogasanalysis and Xenon 133), before and after dialysis, have been carried out in 10 uraemic patients. Methods of investigation and the results showing a post-dialysis improvement of the lung ventilation and perfusion function, are described.

[Usefulness of the early study of intrathoracic digestive anastomoses].

The appearance of a dehiscence after an operation of oesophageal resection and reconstruction with stomach, jejunum or colon, constitutes a highly serious event frequently leading to the patient's death. Early recognition of dehiscence is therefore important for the purpose of starting adequate therapy as quickly as possible and preventing the rise and establishment of those lesions which condition an irreversible trend of the clinical condition. In this note the means today available for early diagnosis fo fistula, with particular reference to early radiological examination, are discussed. Early diagnosis and adequate prompt treatment may, in our opinion, lead to an improvement in the poor results reported by a number of surgical schools.

[Transillumination of the breast].

The physical basis of the method, the procedure, the normal and pathological findings are described. On a series of 125 pathology cases observed, transillumination proved useful as a diagnostic aid in breast diseases.
